Nia and excessive potty area licking?

Nia had this problem for the first time when I put her on EVO red meat. She's come back from peeing and start licking herself to clean the urine off but then she'd lick for a really really long time (5-10 min) and grunt and then make this thrusting motion as if trying to get something off her potty area and continue licking.

I thought it must've been the EVO since the problem started 2 or 3 days after I started that food.

I switched her to Orijen Adult (she did fine on it) and now we're on Orijen 6 fish again. The same food she was on before she became itchy in EVO. She's been on it for...I think 2 months now, and the last few days she's doing it again. Licking, thrusting, licking more.

Last time I went to the vet and he said she doesn't have a UTI and since she wasn't licking when we were there, he didn't really know what was wrong.

What should I do? Should I take her off high protein food and try some regular protein stuff? She's done so well on high protein though, happier to eat, shinier coat...

I don't understand why it would become a problem now since she's been eating Orijen for more than 6 months (in total) without any problems including the fish formula.

Edit: she is spayed by the way so not a heat related thing.

Is it possible that she just has a infection that is not related to the food? Has she been to the Vet for this problem?

Was she sapyed before she had her first heat? Is she at all obese?

She may have Vulvar Skin Fold Dermatitis. This is due to a juvenile vulva recessed so that there are folds of skin around it that hold mositure and you get this yeast and or bacterial infection on the skin. It is also common in obese dogs.

    http://www.acvs.org/AnimalOwners/Hea...oldDermatitis/

I am going to have to have the episioplasty surgery done on Atka and the estimated cost is $650 - $850 from my vet. She has a juvenile vulva that is recessed.

Meanwhile, I am washing the area daily with Antibacterial soap and rinsing thoroughly and then putting Povidone (tamed iodine) on the area and blotting it dry. I also put some Nirtrofurizone powder on it or Neo Predef on the area at the other end of the day.

The licking has greatly improved to the point of only occaisionally licking.. normal frequency. The area is less irritated.. but I know that the surgery is going to be the final ansswer on this.

LOL she's not obese at all! She's darn skinny. Can't get much weight on her LOL.

She was spayed at 7 months old.

I took her to the vet for this problem last time she had it, he did a complete exam on her including checking the area, it's not red or inflamed, he said she was fine, probably a minor irritation or food related problem.

I just researched online a bit today and I'm going to try giving her bottled water first. Apparently some areas' water is too basic or acidic and may cause problems.

Lynn had Vulvar Skin Fold Dermatitis. hers was really deep inside, and not sticking out. the vet wanted her to go through one heat because he said sometimes that can help. and it helped. it is still pretty inverted, but nothing like it used to be. i actually do have to clean and dry it to prevent infection.

Is the area dark or stained? That is another thing to look for.

You could wash it for five days and see if there is improvement. I did that first... and then researched.. and then got an estimate.. and I will schedule it...

    *sigh*

It's not dark or stained. Actually I've only seen her lick and do the thrusting once but my mom said she saw it at least 3 or 4 times in the last week. Otherwise during the day she's not licking at all.

It's only in the morning usually or right before bed. Today she didn't do it though. Hmm...I wonder what's going on.

Vet told me I should use baby wipes on Kit once a day. I don't do it much anymore, but I did for a bit when I thought she might have a UTI (turned out to be nothing).

Cider obsessively licks hers a few times a day and it bothers me. I often poke her and tell her to knock it off. I've taken her in to the vet more than once. She has no form of infection. There is nothing wrong with her anatomy. The embarassing 'diagnosis' in the end was she potentially does it because it feels good.

Re: Nia and excessive potty area licking?

Hmm I feel like we might've found the cause of the itching. My mom told me that every single time she was licking, she was lying on a certain bed-cover. For the last 2 days we didn't let her on that cover and no licking (other than the usual cleaning) at all.

Last time she had itching problems on EVO she also laid on the different colored version of the same bed cover because it was set up for the guests. She laid on it all the time. Perhaps something in the cover is irritating her.

    Will keep watching her.
