    dogs rolling on food

Hello. I have four dogs and a cat. (first time cat owner wow). Anyway. I made crab cakes and they were horrible so I fed them to the dogs. Two of them ate the cakes without a problem. The other two rolled on the food and then only one ate it, the other left it and the cat ate it. I've seen both these dogs roll on other food before. I have no idea why they do it and i would like to know why.

It could be a two fold reason. One is to mask their own scent (my lab use to roll on dead fish something horrible) and the other is to claim the food as "MINE".

Add another reason - doggie "cologne"...some things just provide such a scent that a dog will want to retain that smell....case in point...my already in heaven dog was neutered..when my neighbors female went into heat(thank the stars they got her fixed), he would jump the fence, & cover himself in her poo...he would come home as proud as any young man could be...grinning from ear to ear...quite happy with his cologne..this smell mind you could "gag a maggot", & I would nearly puke washing him trying to remove this smell from him...oh my, how the boys DO love the girls..LOL

My dog will always roll in smelly things if she gets the chance. If she can steal cat poop out of the box she will either eat it or bring it upstairs and roll in it. She would roll in our other dogs poop too, I even caught her rolling in a dead bird last summer

I've never heard of a dog rolling in food. Now, rolling in poop, yes. My neighbor's dog is notorious for that. Go figure.

Okay the smell factor does make so much sense. I have caught several of the dogs rolling on dirty or wet towels, but never food. Come to think of it he only does the rolling thing when I give them fish. But he then eats it. And he did smell like crab for a while. lol
Thanks for your help. Question answered.
