    Gross things dogs roll in...

So I decided to take Semper to the beach this afternoon because it was pretty overcast and there wouldn't likely be any people there. I'm still working on recall with distractions and this beach is mostly closed off (sadly there are no dog parks or fenced areas to practice so it's this and the long leash). When we get there I let him go and throw a stick and he runs off. And he then immeadiately finds something and starts rolling on it. I try to call him back but he was much too excited about the stinky thing. I use the "treat" word and he comes over. I go back holding the leash to see what it was and it was a rotting fish, maggots and all. It really made for a stinky ride home, and needless to say bathtime came early.

So what stinky/gross/nasty things does your dog find intoxicating?

Last summer I was going to India for a while. The day I had to leave me and SO took Max out for a walk. And he found a giant pile of goose poop to roll in. He got it all over his shoulder, collar and neck. So an hour before I was due at the airport SO had to jump in the shower with Max (we were at my aunt's house). It was so nasty.

That same summer he also slipped out the door at my SO's grandma's house and was found rolling in a huge stinking pile of garbage complete with rotting fish.

So....he would like to roll in anything that reeks

I think rotten fish is absolutely the worst. Deer poop, skunk poop - even skunk spray - isn't as bad or as hard to get rid of as rotten fish.

I've mentioned before the theory that I've heard about this. Dogs roll in disgusting stuff so they can cover their own smell while stalking game. So the deer catches a whiff and thinks, "I believe I'm being stalked by a zombie fish. No worries, though. I can surely outrun a zombie fish." And he goes back to grazing - unaware of the incredibly foul-smelling beagle that's getting ready to pounce on him.

Dead things are Marge's favorite. Dead birds, to be precise.

I live on a lake and my dogs favorite passtime is to roll in goose poop.. all three of them do this and it smells horrible. We also get the rotting fish occasionally. One of em also enjoys rolling in dead moles.

When I had a barn the dogs loved to roll in the muck pile. I also had a dog catch and roll on an oppossum which peed on her (it was only playing dead). That took several baths to get the smell out and of course it was midnight.

Any pile of poop he can find...or dead animal...or clean clothes, believe it or not. Duke goes crazy over a pile of clothes just out of the dryer, especially if there's a dryer sheet involved! He dives head-first into fresh laundry just like he does stinky stuff outdoors.

I personally think he just plain enjoys these smells, kinda like humans enjoy the smell of perfume/cologne. The expression on Duke's face during a good laundry or poop roll is one of pure, indisputable happiness.

I only had one dog that ever rolled in something stinky. I am not even sure what it was but it was gross and as she came to the door to come in the smell hit me. I made her wait outside while I grabbed a few towels and dog shampoo. She went directly into the tub. She seemed irritated with me but I am NOT going to live with stinky smells in my house.
All of my other dogs have been the type to jump away from their own Pooh after going. They didn't care to get their feet dirty or even wet from the grass. I kind of expected Carsten to be a roller since he is a bit of a pig by comparison but so far the only time he rolled it was just on the grass and there was no stinky smell.

LOL!! That's a great theory! My dog might've been trying the zombie fish idea since he was very unhappy about me washing it off.

My one aussie won't even walk through a puddle let alone go near anything gross. However, the other just loves the nastiest things imaginable. Her favorite is to roll in goose poop. Sometimes she finds scent, rolls in it, and when I go over to see what it is I don't "see" anything. However, she is just a happy clam seeming to find a treasure of a scent.

I thought that the stinkiest dog was the most dominant dog. I like the fish zombies stalking the deer theory better.

My girl goes to the barn with me and rolls in horse and deer poop. Horse poop I can handle most of the time, but deer poop seems to be greasy and extra yucky.

Dead and decaying possum. It had died by drowning, so nice and juicy. 'Nuff said.

Re: Gross things dogs roll in...

I have some old bones outside that the dogs play with. They are rotting now and I need to get rid of them because they smell putrid and of course, the dogs have to get the decaying stentch all over themselves, right at last call for potty breaks when I want to go to bed. There is a particular bone that is a whole cow hoof and most of the leg. My mastiff LOVES it. He takes it and prances all over the yard. I need to get rid of the nasty thing but he just loves it so much. Sigh.

My poodle/dachshund mix has an awesome sense of smell and he finds ANYTHING to roll in (mostly dead animals and poo) and he finds it ALL. And he MUST be bathed often becuase he sleeps in bed with my under the sheets.

ANd I have to share this one. At my old house, my lab mix would go in the bathroom, take the used washcloths from the tub to the living room, drop them and then proceed to roll himself all over it with what can only be called PURE GLEE. ANd I was cool with it because it smelled like Irish Spring or DOVE. He doesnt do that anymore though.

All of the above. Our yard gets a lot of traffic from the local wildlife + a few barn cats that live behind us. Drives Poca crazy. She's rolling in something within 5 minutes of every trip to the yard.

Don't remember what this was but she was SO happy to be rolling in it....

We have been lucky that he hasn't rolled in anything yucky yet, but he LOVES to roll on bugs. I have no idea, but he finds them and rolls on them. It's weird

If statements like that have taught me anything, it's to knock on wood - immediately! LOL

Bella loves a good roll in the woodchuck poo. That stuff is super smelly and requires two baths....luckilly (knock on wood) she hasn't found any really fresh stuff lately.
