Angry Dog won't go in kennel or outside

I have a big boxer dog, he's about 2 years old and 95 lbs. He's huge and really really hard to handle because of his size and weight. Each night i have to put him in his kennel. he knows that when i call him downstairs that he has to go in his kennel, so he won't follow me downstairs. He lies down on his side and puts on the puppy face, it annoys the heck out of me because i want him to come, and he won't budge by calling him. He rolls on his back wanting me to pet his stomach, every time he doesn't want to go outside or into his kennel. I have to pull him by the collar and push him, or carry him downstairs or outside. I really hate doing that because it really looks like it hurts him when i pull hard on his collar to pull him downstairs, and second because i need him to obey, he's to big and hard to pull around all the time. The only way i can get him to go into his kennel is to grab some treats or pieces of bread and make a trail of them into his kennel. I can't keep doing that, i'm running out of bread and treats.
    please help.
i can't stand it anymore it makes me crazy!

I get the impression that he's never had any training in the basic commands....or, are you saying this is something entirely new?

Have you ever done any strict obedience training with this dog?

Your pooch needs to spend a little less time inside if he is going to get used to being outside.

If I were you I would try taking him out for a walk about time when he should be going into his crate, after the walk don't go inside the house and place his water bowl in his kennel. Being that he will be thirsty he will go in without a problem and drink his water. Take advantage of this time, praise him and leave him there to sleep. After the walk he should be a little tired so it helps reduce the stress of being locked up (which he obviously doesn't like) and will be happy to lay down and rest.

Another thing you can try if you aren't able to go on walks is taking him outside about an hour before he has to go in his kennel, that way he is used to being outside and isn't tempted to stay inside where he'd rather be.

However these are just quick fixes, what you ultimately want is your dog to WANT to be in the kennel. What does your dog like? Does he like to play with a certain toy? I sure hope so because if so you can initiate a game while inside his kennel (supposing its roomy enough to do so). Build a positive association with the kennel and it shouldn't be so scarey. If possible spend a few minutes inside it with him.

You may also want to start using a command that mean to go inside his kennel. You can accomplish this by throwing a treat in the kennel and saying "Go to Kennel" and pointing, he is rewarded when he gets there because of the treat and you can give him a good pat on the back for a good job.

    Hope that helps!

no he hasn't had any obedience training other than a few commands like "sit" and whatnot. But, most of the time we aren't home, both my parents work and everyone else is at school so...yeah, and well i don't have any money for obedience training, nor do i know how to do some of it. I have to have someone that knows what their doing SHow me how to work with my dog or i won't be able to remember. (visual learner here)

I'm sorry but it was very irresponsible to get a dog, especially a large working breed dog, when no one has the time or funds to train it properly. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Please do the right thing and return the dog to the breeder. Of course, this assumes you got him from a responsible breeder. If you didn't then find him a good home or turn him over to a responsible Boxer rescue group, which you can find through the AKC web site http://www.akc.org.

A Dog will not do what you tell him to do unless you properly train him to do it, that's just how it is.

You said the dog rolls over on his back and shows you his tummy when you are yelling for him to "come" this behavior is a common response when a dog is confused and scared of the person who is yelling at them because they don't know what to do.

Buy some books on dog training, buy some little soft training treats, and get cracking. This dog will NEVER do what you want until you spend the time to teach it what you want.

    it's your choice.

Do you want a dog that never listens to you?
Do you want a dog that listens to you when he pleases?

    or

Do you want a dog that always listens to your every command?

Check out the videos at DogstarDaily ..they have lots of info and recommendations for books etc and videos you can order to help you along. I understand the visual learning thing. There is a great video dvd called Suzanne Garrett's Crate Games" to help your dog learn the crate is a great place to be...but read on..

Okay, so think about this..you guys are gone all day..what does your dog do? The dishes? Watch soap operas? Nope..he waits for you to come home. Then you come home feed him, possibly walk him then expect him to kennel up or go outside without YOU. No wonder he doesn't want to do it. He wants to spend quality time with you!

Boxers are high energy, very affectionate dogs. He needs you to work his brain AND his brawn. It is YOUR responsibility as a dogowner to fulfill your dog's needs...he is not the one with the big brain and opposable thumbs so YOU are the key to his wellbeing.

You can also check out the site dogwise.com it has LOTS of selections of training books and videos you can get. There is also lots available on youtube. There is a user on youtube called Kikopup that has fantastic videos of clicker training and exercises you can do with your dog. No need to force him to kennel up, give him outlets for his energy and need for attention and then work on making the kennel an awesome place to be.
    Good luck.
