    New Puppy Breed Question

    Hello all,
    I'm wondering what's your thoughts are on the breed our new pup. The Humane Society had her labeled as a retriever mix. (They just got 20 new puppy's in IMO they where being quick to label)

    Her name is Bella she is about 21lbs and 3.5 months old.

    From what I can find I believe her to be a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.

    Thoughts?

    For Flickr, click on the picture you want to share to get it on a page by itself. Then, click on the arrow that is swooping to the right, and select the BBCode option. Select the 427 x 640 option, and then copy the code in the box and paste it into your post here. Repeat that for each picture you want to share.

    What a pretty pup! Ridgeback mix is a definite possibility, but I think I'd lean more towards either a purebred Black Mouth Cur or a Black Mouth Cur mix.

    She's super cute for sure! RR's are kind of rare depending where you are. I see GSD/Lab or Golden mix...maybe some cur? She looks a little like my Bella who's GSD x lab. Nice name, btw

    Re: New Puppy Breed Question

    I could believe she's part retriever from her ears and hair, but she could be mixed with Ridgeback. It would be interesting to have her DNA tested. Either way, she's beautiful!

    Re: New Puppy Breed Question

    My vote is: Rhodesian Ridgeback/GSD/Labrador. I'll try and explain how I got there.

    1. Ridgeback - her coloring and build;
    2. GSD - the muzzle reminds me strongly of a GSD;
    3. Labrador - her ears droops forward and is shaped like a Labrador's.

    If she's a mix of those 3 she should have a wonderful temperament. It would be interesting to see what the DNA picks up but regardless of that she's a gorgeous pup.

    Thanks, LeoRose

    I might have to substitute my GSD guess for Black Mouth Cur. Bella's coat is also longer and softer than what you normally associate with a Rhodesian Ridgeback/Cur so the humane society might have a point about her being at least part retriever. Or else they simply ''retrieved'' that theory out of nowhere during a mad rush.

    Re: New Puppy Breed Question

    My black and white mutt (or possibly coated Xolo?) is called a "Lab mix" on all her official paperwork, which is basically vet speak for "we have no idea about what she is, but she's mostly black and obviously not a Chihuahua or terrier mix".

    Re: New Puppy Breed Question

    LeoRose,

    In South Africa they would less politely call that a ''pavement special'', lol. I've had a few of those over the years and health and temperament-wise they beat a purebred paws down 99.9% of the time.

    Re: New Puppy Breed Question

    Thanks for the input everyone I had never heard of a "Black Mouth Cur" before this (We live in MI) but looking at the Photos of them I can see where they do look alike. We have been thinking of getting a DNA test done just to find out but either way she is a great dog.

    When it comes to DNA testing do any companies have a better rep of being accurate vs another? Looking on amazon you see a lot of reviews where people say they are not correct and not to waste your time or money.

    Thanks Zug

    Re: New Puppy Breed Question

    I used a cheapie one ... umm... BioPet Vet Lab... and I'm still scratching my head over the results.

    According to the results, this dog is 37-74% Bulldog, 20-26% Italian Greyhound, 10-19% American Staffordshire Terrier and 10-19% Collie....

    There is the possibility (slim, but there) that she is actually a coated Xoloitzxuintli. If I ever have a spare $100 or so, I might run a Wisdom panel test, as Xolo is one of the breeds they say they can identify.

    Re: New Puppy Breed Question

    I vote for a Lab/GSD mix ... very common possibility.

    Some traits to look for:
    1. Lab - very friendly, likes water, will drink from the faucet or hose. Webbed feet?
    2. GSD - very smart, will already know some words, even if not trained, may be a little timid with strangers.
    3. Ridgeback - Quick and very alert, may not be interested in people.
    4. Cur - May have a black or purple mouth, gums, or tongue, or belly. Not as much light or pink coloration on skin.

    The curled, dark tail is typical of a GSD-mix. The blond 'streaks' on the sides behind the shoulders are called 'angel wings,' typical of a Golden mix. Look up GSD Golden mix on Google images - on the adult, the shape of the head and nose, as well as the black coloration are distinctive, making an easy identification ... but I can't tell anything definitive at the puppy stage. Looks similar to my dog, in the avatar photo.
