    Dog Peeing herself help

OK..... i know this probably should go in the behavior forum But i think it goes beyond training.

My lab rot mix is about 6-7 months old and she has an issue with peeing herself. I live in my fraternity house (if your already concerned about that she doesnt drink beer and she plays outside twice a day) She meets new people all the time everyday but she always pees herself. she will either lay on her side and pee, or sit and pee while they pet her. if it happend outside i really wouldnt care but it happens inside very often. She was the runt of the litter when i got her and she was but up and couldnt walk for about a week when i got her. so im not sure if she was beat up by the other puppies and i highly doubt the owner beat her.

What is the best way to correct this behavior and do u guys think this is like a abuse issue from before i got her.

It sounds like submissive urination and probably not abuse. Do a search on Google (submissive urination dogs) and you will find lots of sites on how to correct this behavior. It is easily corrected but will take time and lots of patience. Good luck and keep us posted.

Patt is one of the highly regarded postors here for her most helpfull answers, you are acting a little wierd. "Wierd" is a very vague and immature term!

after doing some research and talkin to my vet we came up with the following....

    1. water intake reduction
    2. ignoring the dog untill she is more comfortable with you or the new person when you enter the room or house
    3. if problems presist, anti anxiety medication for dogs has been a more than proven helpful tool of helping this issue and consist of a 3 month cycle.

so thank you Pat for drawing my attention to what the issue is called, and ill let u guys know how it goes in a few weeks

    You are so welcome!

There is no quick fix, so be patient and I'm sure you will get results. Some years back we adopted a 4 yo Doxie that had this problem ( that's why her original guardians got rid of her). It took us many months, but in the end she quit doing SU and was a very loving little girl. We of course were very happy not to be peed on again. LOL

I'm looking forward to your updates.

Bob I was asking patt a serious question I was not being rude or sarcastic when I asked how to fix it. I know who patt is and I know how highly regarded patt is. And you want to say I'm being vague and immature.......... I don't think I once asked you for your opinion and I don't think my question to patt sounded rude or sarcastic at all. sorry patt if it did.

great, keep reading ... and try to leave that #3 as a last resort. (i would think) Gabi was a submissive pee'er when I first brought her home. She'd pee when i came home (on my foot occassionally) or if she was fearful of a movement of mine or the other dogs. Once she was comfortable with her surroundings...she stopped. sounds like your case is a little more advanced, but thought i'd share my experience

    good luck!

I’m assuming (I know that’s not a good thing) this is an adult dog. Possibly she may have a UTI or another medical problem. I would suggest a vet visit to determine if it is medical OR behavior.

If it is submissive urination I found the following links to be quite helpful. It will take time and patience, but it can be corrected. Please do not look at her funny (as stated above in your first post) or punish the dog in anyway, she cannot help herself and you’ll make the problem worse.

I hope this helps. Please keep us updated.

    Re: Dog Peeing herself help

she's been to the vet and no UTI she's done this her whole life she's never been disciplined for it and we don't look at her funny in a bad way........ she's a very good dog and had never had to be disciplined for anything! And yes patt she's going on 5yrs old. MY vet said really there's nothing he can do for it unless it gets any worse that's why I was asking how you fix it.
