Cool My New Foster Rescue Arrived Today! Pics -- (And I Need A Name!)

Thought I would start a new thread on her (I originally mentioned her in the I'm Getting a German Shepherd thread) since she has some health problems and she'll probably be here a while.

I went to animal control to look at some dogs that were apart of a hoarding case -- 79 dogs total. Chihuahuas, German Shepherds, Poodles, Whippets, Greyhounds, and mix breeds.

Here's a link to the article in the newspaper that talks about the case:

    http://www.2theadvocate.com/news/27006914.html

All the chihuahuas were fostered, as did the greyhounds and whippets. Some of the German Shepherds haven't found fosters, but instead of taking one of the German Sheperds as I planned to, I waited because a Shepherd rescue is coming Thursday to look at them and I'd prefer to wait.

Amongst the mix breeds was a so-called whippet/jack russel mix which turned out to not be whippet or jack russel. More like Schnauzer/Wire Hair terrier. There was also a blind/deaf catahoula cur/bull terrier mix that is going to a disabled dog sanctuary in New York City, which was featured was Oprah awhile back. There's also a not-so-nice shepherd mix that will be going to the Shepherd rescue.

I ended up taking the schnauzer/wire hair terrier mix for foster, and may end up getting one of the german shepherds for a short period next week, as well as one of the elderly poodles for a few days while foster homes are worked out. But, for now, I just have the terrier/schnauzer mix.

    So, on with her story!

She is apparently quite old, as her teeth are rotting out of her mouth and are just caked up with gunk and very worn down.

A local vet came by over the weekend to look at the dogs and do some minor testing on them. She was fecal tested and found positive for every worm except tape (she had whip, hook and round). Her nails were curled under but were clipped.

She also tested high positive for heartworms, and her ears are gunked up. She doesn't seem to mind other dogs, but because she is so old and has never been out of a cage her entire life, she is extremely hand shy and nervous about everything. Noises, sights, sounds, people, and just pretty much everything scares her to death.

She's going to the vet Thursday (vet won't be back until then) to have her full check-up, vaccinations, another worming, some meds for her ears, and to schedule her to be spayed.

Oh yeah, she's never been named, so take a look at her pics below and start giving me some idea's for a name!

That second picture broke my heart. Those eyes!

She needs a nice old lady name, like Violet or Trudie or something of the like.

Awww, she's adorable. I'm not good with names, so I don't have any ideas. I don't think she's too old, though, by looking at her eyes and general condition. She probably just wasn't fed properly.

I saw the thread title and scrolled straight to the pictures to see them before reading... I was thinking "man, what is that GSD mixed with?!"

Anyway, she is a beautiful girl. I love those eyes. Good on you for taking her in. What's her temperament like?

Re: My New Foster Rescue Arrived Today! Pics -- (And I Need A Name!)

Hi guys, thanks for all the suggestions for names! I like Violet and I like Annie, and I'm really stuck between those two names... (I already have a Katie, or I'd be thinking about that name too!)

I'll talk a little bit about her demeanor, since I've spent the first day with her to get a feel for things on how she is.

She is extremely frightened, as I mentioned. I took her out this morning to go potty, and I had to carry her to the front yard with a harness and leash on. She refused to move, and cowered to the ground shaking. She also kept looking at the wet grass like, "what is this stuff touching me?! Ahhh!" because she'd spent her whole life in a cage, she wasn't very sure what the ground really was.

So far she has shown no aggression towards me whatsoever. She freaks out when I open up her crate to feed her, give her water, take her out, or just come near her cage period. But when I reach in to grab her (because no matter how long you wait, she will not come out on her own) she backs away shivering instantly, but doesn't growl or show any sign of aggression. So that's good that she has no fear aggression, or she'd be even harder to adopt out on top of everything else.

I haven't let her out near any of the dogs yet, until she gets her vaccinations. All my guys are vaccinated, but I am worried more about HER getting something than mine. That's mainly because I work at a vet, and a lot of my guys go to work with me, so there's no telling what I've tracked in over time. We have a very large wash room, about the size of a small bedroom, and that's where she's staying for now -- where it's nice and quiet with no loud noises.

I'm about to go call the pound director and ask him about this tag she has on. She has on a rabies tag that is dating 1995, but I am not sure if that's her original or if it's a spare that he put on her (it's scratched up somewhat, but there's no telling...). So I'm going to find out in a few minutes about that.

    More updates later!

(I edited the original post to include this link as well)

Here's a link to the news article that talks about the animals that were pulled from the BYB/Hoarder:

see, Violet fits because right now she's a shrinking violet...a shy one. She'll come out of that shell though, especially with the care you're giving her.

    Keep us updated!

What an awesome person you are for taking her in!!!

I think she should be named Sandy from the movie Annie.
