    Surprise its a Puppy, anyone?

Anyone seen this new show on Animal Planet?
The families they depict getting a surprise puppy for a family member are described as enthusiastic about getting a puppy (there are only happy surprises, they dont air the Bloopers I guess)--

Only watched 2 episodes so far, but what is disturbing it doesnt cover any training prep the families undergo, and some of the pups are crossbreeds (chi-pugs, sheltie- cavalier king charles spaniels, husky dane mixes) but they reference the people offering the pups as "Breeders " without going into at all, what responsible breeding is...

    THoughts anyone?...

I think I would have to know more of the backstory before passing judgement. If it was something in the making already, like a kid had wanted one for a while and there had been some research and planning then, ok, go for it. But if it is really just as simple as "Surprise, here's a 12-20 year money and time commitment with teeth and unknown genetic health risks that requires years of training" then no, terrible, bad idea.
As far as getting into responsible breeding, is it the place of that show to go into detail as to what is or is not responsible breeding...ehh, maybe not. It would be nice for everything puppy related to come with a disclaimer about genetic testing, temperment testing and in general what it means to be a responsible breeder but I think that it may not be the right forum for that type of discussion.

The families involved do seem in earnest and like people that are committed, my objection is to how it is packaged.... and the chi-pugs and cavelier- shelties smacked of BYB which I thought should not be favorably portrayed in this manner on a national TV show (its a cute show, and heart warming, but giving BYBs such publicity is a no Go for me)....

Sounds like a really bad concept. A show like that could do so much for helping to educate people about the puppy-buying process.

Yeah, sounds like it promotes the idea of surprising people with puppies, since of course I'm SURE they only show the ones where the people are all happy and excited, and never the people who don't react well. Fantastic, lets give people ideas......ugh.

Some people say that doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity, I call it training my dog

It sounds a little like "Pick a Puppy" where a family goes to three different places to look at a puppy. They then choose which one of the three breeds (or cross-breeds) that they want. Some of the episodes they also bring three foster pups or dogs to show the people and they choose one of the three. They do go to the people's place to see where the new puppy will be living and check out their back yard fences and ask them why they chose the dog they did.

Yeah I would have like this version better if they had gone to foster / resuce and talked about the fostering concept alittle-- and they DO NOT do a house check at all to see where the puppies will be living....

They stick entirely to cutesy and I think going to a shelter or rescue would have been too much a "Downer" for the show's vibe (its in these short 15 min segments, 2 puppies and 2 families per half hour show)...

Terrible. I saw it last night. I don't know what animal planet is doing lately. There's a show on there about building tree houses. I like it, but come on, it shouldn't be on ANIMAL planet -__-

I agree with what everyone else is saying. It's different if they were going to shelters, picking three dogs and then choosing one to adopt. But promoting back yard breeders and buying puppies as surprises? I just can't get on board with that.

If my mom/dad/boyfriend/bestfriend/random stranger ever got me a surprise puppy I'd smack them silly.

Just like Ancient Aliens clearly fits on the History channel....

I haven't seen the show (I don't think we get Animal Planet even), but I used to watch Pick A Puppy every chance I get, actually a pretty good show. Most of the time they met puppies and breeders in the breeder's home, got to meet the dam and/or sire... was actually a decent show. Plus... PUPPIES.
