When do males start hiking their legs?

Wow, look at me. TWO topics in one day!

But seriously, Rosco is six months now and his little testes are just now starting to drop...and he still squats like a girl. I hope it's not too weird of a question but I've never owned a male before

My Lab started when he was almost a year...my Mastiff just turned a year old this month and hasn't done it yet. Just depends on the dog.

With both my Lab and my Mastiff their "thingys" didn't drop until they were around 9 months.

I've never owned a male either, but a friend had a Toy Poodle who didn't start raising his leg to pee until he was about a year old.

Then again, it might depend on the size of the dog, or even the individual dog itself. I really don't know. I wouldn't be worried about it though.

Ok, good! For some reason I was expecting it to start at the six month range. Then I've heard of males who always squat and I was worried about Roscy's manliness

I know with my GSD's it was anywhere between 6 months and a year (sometime a little later). It seemed that the larger the dog the later the leg hiking.
It was often funny when they first began. Sometimes lifting the wrong leg or losing their balance and toppling over. Silly puppies.

heh heh, for some reason I'm excited to see him start doing it. Just as long as he doesn't feel the need to do it all over my house. It might not be so cute then.

That cracked me up...My Mastiff gets made fun of for still peeing like a "little girl" by my boyfriend. Honestly, though neither one of us really care if he never does it.

well Meir is ten months and is still peeing like a girl....

Cuinn was lifting his leg at like 12 weeks..... it all depends sometimes if the boys have a "roll model" they will lift their legs earlier but that doesnt seem to be the case here....

    oh well
I wish he would lift his leg.... right now he is peeing on himself
    what a pain.

I was really never that concerned enough to research it or anything, and he never ever potties out in public. Then today at the park he decided to pee near one of his favorite 'sniffing' trees and I actually found myself looking around and hoping nobody was watching his girl'ish squat

    oh well

lol, well I guess I could have it worse!

He did a "number two" once when he was itty bitty and I flipped out and told him no because it was in my neighbors yard and I was less that prepared (Harlie never does either so bringing poop clean up materials never dawned on me) and he's never done it again. He usually rushes straight to the back door to go out when we come home from walking/the park/car rides etc. We should consider ourselves lucky! There's nothing like seeing someone carrying around a bag of crap

Snoopy doesn't lift his leg. I heard that if you neuter them before sexual maturity that they may not do it. And that with some dogs they need to see another dog doing it before they do it. Though that may not be true seeing as Shlava has dogs that lift their legs and some that don't.

Re: When do males start hiking their legs?

My last two males never did ( Zubin and Hottie) and many of my bigger shepherd males it took them years before they did. ( unless they really wanted to mark something).
At your dogs age, he is still a baby and not even sexually mature yet really. "Hiking " the leg is not just to urinate- but also a behavior of marking- like kicking the ground with their back feet.

my dog is 2 and he doesnt lift his leg to pee. he just kind of stretches out and lets it go. i thought it was weird at first cause i was expecting him to lift his leg but nope. i figure whatever works for him and as long as he isnt peeing on himself.

Mal will mark things that other dogs have peed on but doesn't lift his leg JUST to pee most of the time and he'll be 2 in July. Indy, OTOH, ALWAYS lifts his leg. :P

hmm...maybe I can convince my husband to pee on a tree a few times. I'll tell him:
"Roscy needs a positive, solid male role model. Now DO IT!"

Just kidding. But really..he works all of the time and Rosco is stuck with a house full of girls. Must. Find.Male. Role Model..
But yeah, I'm not fixing him until after a year of age.

borzoimom, that's good to know. I figured he wasn't quite at sexual maturity yet..although he humps on Harlie quite a bit, but it's usually only if I yell at her about something (kind of like "Yeah, Harlie! Who do you think you are not listening to Mom!"..and he looks terribly awkward like he doesn't even know WHY he's doing it.

Yea but his humping could be play dominance instead.. They really need time. I have had males lift their legs as early as like 7 months old ( GSD) and as late as never.. Its a behavior to mark more than just " relieving themselves.)

oh most certainly! She's been the dominant one since he came into our lives but he's slowly creeping up the totem pole and she's giving in.

Ohhhhhh that wont last long.. lol.. Bitches are always the boss and the males let them.. lol

However- if he continues = check her for a anal gland impaction or infection. In a young dog they are confused by the odor and think the female might be in heat or vice versa..

Uallis has never even done that. He's never pottied anywhere but at home since we brought him home. I don't know what his deal is. We still carry plastic bags and such though just in case. The first time I decide not to bring them will probably be the first time he decides to do it...

We call him a "nervous pooer"....LOL!!
