Does my dog miss me?

Hi, I've just had this question on my mind and I'm not sure if anyone can answer it...

I'm away at college and I come home every couple of weeks. My dog is at home and I have always wondered if she actually knew how long I was gone? Sometimes when she sees me for the first time in a while, she seems more excited than normal..but I don't know if she really knew how long I was away. Does anyone know??

I think......That she does miss you, Whether she miss you for 30 minutes or a month. If she is a loving home while you are away she copes without you well. Now, I believe if you were to take her out of her home she knows and placed her elsewhere while you were gone. I do belive she would be depressed. They need familarity to be happy when their owners are absent.

When I go outside to throw the garbage out, I come back and my dogs will go crazy trying to greet me. I dont think dogs has any sense of time.. 5 secs is almost the same as 5 years for them.. LOL.. they greet me as if I was gone for a loooooooonngggggg time.. :D

I also don't think they have a real sense of time. My old neighbor was what I called a bad dog owner. There is a wood fence down our property line. They would leave and go out of town for extended times , sometimes 2 weeks. They paid someone to come and feed their Lab. He was a sweet ole boy>Leeky. After a couple of days, I would notice he would stay at the end of their driveway. I knew then, they were gone. A couple of more days and he would stay at the end of my drive. I knew he was feeling abandoned. I would invite him down to the house and feed him and give him dog treats. He would still go back to the end of my drive and wait. It was kind of sad really, he was a good dog and they didn't pay much attention to him.Eventually they would come back and he would be happy to see them though, David

This is a question I wonder about often. I had to give my dog up last spring and wonder if he remembers or misses me. I hope he doesn't. I sometimes worry he is remembering me and wondering why I abandoned him. I know this doesn't sound rational but I still wonder. He and I were super close. He was my baby. I am pretty sure he is happy and healthy now and doing well - and I hope he isn't thinking about us ever.

Once when I was in the hospital for a week my GSD wouldn't eat or play. My husband tried to get him to do something but all he did was stay on his blanket and look sad. I would call the house and my husband would put the phone to Yansa's ear and he would get excited when he heard my voice. I was so worried about him and what would happen if I 'didn't make it'.
Three other GSD's I had did the same when I had to fly out of state for my sisters funeral. I was gone a few days and all 3 laid around moping until I came home.
I know my babies missed me. :p

My husband and I have both had to travel a lot since we got the dog, we didn't expect to, but the family situation became that way. We don't need to go both at once, so we take turns. We have both noticed that when the one is away, the dog acts differently for one or two days. And when the one comes back, the dog sleeps on their side of the bed that night!
