Anyone else order from them? I get their catalog regularly and only occasionally order from them because usually with shipping, it's cheaper to purchase from Petco, PetSmart or a local independent.
However, I have purchased some interesting things from them (the endless knot rope ball was one, Onyx LOVED it!). I was just curious if I'm the only one, aside from my Mom.
For those who aren't sure of who I'm talking about or never heard of them, Dr's Foster & Smith is a catalog animal supply company. They also have a website www.drsfostersmith.com where you can order products for dogs, cats, birds, fish and almost all other types of domesticated animals.
I've ordered from them and been happy with the products.
However, I happen to live in a city that has a Pet Edge warehouse, so I don't pay shipping. Since PetEdge is one of the main suppliers for Petsmart, if I see something there I just get it for 1/2 price at PetEdge. They do have a minimum order but I just keep a running list going or sombine with a neighbor.
I've ordered from them quite a bit. Never had a problem.
Check out Jeffers Pet, too...it isn't as "classy" as Foster/Smith, but you can find some things super-cheap!
Thanks Dog5! I'll have to check them out, as I've never heard of them.
With Merlin coming, and Onyx seems to be getting bored with what she's got, I figured it might be time to stock up on some things for the two of them...
Jeffers is a good place to stock up - the more you order of one product, the cheaper it gets. At one time one of my chihuahuas was absolutely ADDICTED to those little nylabone wishbones, so I ordered him 10 or 12 of them! Needless to say as soon as they arrived he got interested in something else...oh well, I have enough to last us a while!
They are reliable and reasonably complete in their product descriptions and they ship in accordance with their stated policies. What else would you want in an on-line supplier?
The do have products that are not always available in brick-and-mortar stores. Even if a local chain, feed store or pet shop has those items from time-to-time, they could be out of stock when you show up.
I've found their basic prices to be competitive with the chains and the local places. Of course, you do have to add in shipping costs. But on small and non-bulky items, the shipping cost is not much more than the sales tax and other ancillary costs would be from a local venue.
Basically, you'll get what you order in a reasonable time but not necessarily cheaper than you could find it someplace else.
I order my Advantage from Drs. Foster and Smith, or did, until my vet agreed to charge me their price.
I order more often from KvVet Supply, because they don't charge shipping on most things that I order (like my EQyss shampoo and conditioners). For larger items (like crates), they do charge, but if you spend $50, then shipping is free. They're fast, too. I usually get my order within 3 days.
I order from them all the time , but most of it is fish and aquarium supplies . I can get things cheaper , even with shipping costs ,for my aquariums than at my local pet supply stores .
I order all my bird supplies from Foster and Smith and have been pleased they took over a bird supply place a bunch of years back but have kept most of the products ..... so they are a place I order from regularly
for dog supplies I order from UPCO.com
talk about reliable and cheap.....
limited supplies but what you can get is inexpensive and good quality, I have never had a problem
s
We order some things from them too...I prefer to buy locally in our family-run pet stores, but I have bought things through there that I cannot find in stores...I much prefer them to petsmart/petco (better selection and much better quality, I have found). In fact, Zoe's gigantic bed is from Drs F&S...it was expensive, but they guarantee it for life and she just loves it.
WE mainly order from PetEdge becasue where we live I can pick up the order at their warehouse and skip shipping charges. since they are a primary supplier to Petsmart, anything you see there can be yours for usually <1/2 the price at PetEdge. There is a minimum order amount of $60 but I just pool orders with neighbors or put my own in twice per year and stock up. NOt hard to do with 3 dogs, a cat, and rats...plus lots of fosters.
