    Question Neutered male still mounts

OK odd question, my 11 mo male Papillon who was Neutered at 6 mo who never mounted before and still squats to pee, Is now acting like he wants to mount my 10 mo female Papillon who is in heat.
He isnt actually trying to do the "dee" but he acts like he is trying to mount her. Is this normal? I know she couldnt get pregnant but Im sure it is annoying for her. I try to seperate them as much as I can.

Oh by the way she is going to get spayed also, she is pretty small so they wanted to wait til she was a little older.

    Thanks for the help

Two Papillons?? I would love to see some pictures! I have two papillons as well (male at 5 1/2 mo and female at 1 year).

Mounting will not necessarily stop after neutering. It is not only a sexual act, but also a social act depending on the circumstances. Who is the higher ranking dog between the two of them?

My female pap will mount my male pap from time to time. He is smaller by about 2 - 3 lbs and she is MUCH more assertive than he is. I typically let them sort it out, it doesnt last for too long.

If you dislike the activity, I would work on redirecting him when he does this. I haven't had to deal with the behavior around a bitch in heat, so that may not work as well as it does during other times. Others will have more advice.

I have a pic of them on the avatar I will try to post on here but I seem to not have small enough pics..lol I guess she would be the Alpha dog between the 2. He never mounted before. He actually doesnt act like a male usually..lol he is about 8 pounds and she is 4 and he is a major goof ball! we love them.

Yours sound about the exact reverse of mine. My male is about 4 1/2 lbs and my female is almost 8 lbs. Bailey has a ton of attitude and very outgoing. Oscar on the other hand is much more timid and can be a lap dog when given the chance.

It could be simply the fact that she is in heat. I read on another post that males can even tie with a female in heat when they are neutered. I have no experience in that or no specific knowledge other than that post, so someone else will have to comment.

I would just try redirection. If that doesnt work, you could always work on separating them with baby gates until she is done.

Sex is mainly in the brain. Obviously your dog still has that intact.

My 9 month old neutered male shih-tzu will mount other small dogs when they are playing. it is a dominance thing. We had him neutered at six months right after he "mounted" my sister's leg. It was hilarious. He has never tried that with me or my husband.

It could be a dominance thing, but since she's in heat, that could also be the reason. My mom took in a pregnant stray cat, and waited too long after the kittens were gone to spay her, so she went into heat again. The cat started flirting with the neutered male cat, so much that he gave in and mounted her just to get her to go away. It did satisfy her for a while, and she was spayed as soon as the vet said it was safe. The male cat won't go near her anymore, LOL. The hormones going around when an animal is in heat are pretty strong, and even neutered animals do have some testosterone in them (from the adrenal glands), so that's probably the reason for it.

This is perfectly normal behavior, given your bitch is in season. Your dog may be neutered, but, he's still able to have sex whenever the bitch is ready and willing.

Mounting is perfectly normal behavior, and done for various reasons, including excitement during play. It's not always about dominance. When there's a bitch who is in heat present, the reason is obvious.

Thanks, well I guess it is what it is a man is still a "man"...lol SEX SEX SEX..lol
Should I worry that he will want to mark things now? And would it hurt her if they did do something since she is much smaller than him? Im still seperating them because I just think it would hurt her.

Probably wise to keep a close eye on him - you will want to catch him the second he starts to lift his leg. If he does, then contain him when you cannot supervise him, and treat him like he's a new puppy just being housetrained.

I'd keep the two separated until she's done. He may hurt her, may not, but if she were mine, I'd make sure he didn't have access to her at all.
