does spaying a dog calm her down?

i know that this isn't supposed to be true, esp for female dogs, but im wondering if anyone else feels that spaying calmed their dog?

my aussie girl (5 months) was spayed about 2 weeks ago. while she is still a crazy puppy, she seems much calmer. at first i thought maybe it was because she was recovering but it's been a while now and she seems to be having no problem with healing.

she isn't like a totally different pup, but i feel like im spending a lot less time chasing her around to keep her out of trouble. she is spending more time just laying down next to me and hanging out. she didn't even used to like being pet and now she will lay beside me and turn over to get her chest rubbed.

is she ill? she doesn't have any other symptoms. im not complaining about the change because she is a handful for sure, she just seems a little more mature.

they said that she was just about to go into heat when they spayed her, she had bloody discharge for a few days after her surgery. i dont know if that hormone change effected anything?

just wondering if anyone elses female seemed calmer after?

I didn't notice any difference in Katie after her spay. She's always been fairly calm inside. Outside or in training classes, she still a maniac. I wonder if the fact that she was almost in season made a difference. I think I've read that some dogs have behavioral changes around their estrus cycles.

She might just be recovering from her spay.

My dog never calmed down after his neuter. It *looked* like he did the first few weeks I brought him home, but I think he was just recovering from his surgery/getting used to his surroundings.

Nope. I believe spaying too early can actually cause females to be less calm, as when females mature they produce a calming hormone. Never allow them to produce this, and its likely they'll be more hyper and/or even aggressive as an adult. Not always, of course... The temperament of the dog itself is still a big factor, but it definitely doesn't help. But someone feel free to correct me if wrong.

That's why if I have a choice though I would wait to spay them until a year or later.

I firmly agree with Lupen, spaying a dog before they mature has a major effect on their hormones. I have an American eskimo which is a very hyper breed, we never spayed her (personal choice) and she is by far the laziest and most calm spitz I've ever met and my family has always had Eskies. We have a 12 week pyr mix female and I'm struggling with whether I want to spay her now per vets advice or wait til she's 18 months and is matured hormones wise so it doesn't affect her. But spaying at whatever age is a personal choice and honestly every dog is different. My dad neutered his daschund at 2 yrs old and it definitely calmed him down but it also made him lose his strong muscular build and he's out on alot of weight which most people say never happens so its definitely dog specific to how they react to being altered. But from personal experience I definitely agree with Lupen.

I have found it to have an effect on their attitude, but not energy...I haven't seen it was all females, but both my girls that I had left intact got mood swings about a month before they went into heat, I referred to it as Doggy PMS, I spayed Baby dog before finishing her for that reason, her mood swings were so bad that she chewed up Misty's entire leg and bit the end of Perky's ear off..the second full ownership was transferred to me she was spayed to stop the mood swings, and wala she is sweet baby dog all the time now lol. Misty had mood swings around her heats as well, but they were never as bad as Baby's, she would act more witchy, but she never actually HURT anyone lol

Both of my dogs I have had have been/are female, both spayed after a year old. Didn't help either of them. Then again can you really calm a BC down?, not that Bella was a BC she was a BC cross Whippet (I think!) as mad as a BC though!.

Re: does spaying a dog calm her down?

I have had dogs all my life but Susie was the first one I ever had spayed. I had her spayed at six months and have never had to fight weight like I have with her. Even when she was younger and very active, she was hard to keep at a decent weight. Kiska, who was spayed at about a year and a half, after having two seasons, has never had any problem maintaining a healthy weight.

I realize that is only two entirely different breeds of dogs but I am not going to get Kris spayed till she has had at least one season, preferably two, depending on how much trouble it is. I also want to do Agility with her and have read that it is better not to spay them early.

hmmm, ill make sure to keep an eye on her weight. i've never had that problem with spayed dogs before though, maybe i've been lucky. i've also always had extremely active dogs, so maybe that helps.

perhaps she is just still healing up. i guess only time will tell. thanks for the opinions!
