Help, My house smells like dog : (

I got home from work today and as soon as I opened the door it hit me. My nose isn't very good but I could tell My house reeks of dog.

Yesterday, was raining and I had wet dog in the house and today is humid and stagnant.

Indy was housebroken when I adopted him and hasn't had any "known" accidents in the house. (well there was the basement incident but he doesn't go down there unsupervised.). He has free roam of most of the house when I'm at work. But I've heard horror stories of people finding foul places where their dog had been peeing for years when they replace the carpets (I have hardwood and rugs). Should I be worried? It smells more like stinky dog BO to me than pee or poo but i could be horribly wrong. What do I do?

I'm thinking give the dog a bath, and wash the sofa cover blanket first. What are other keys to a fresh smelling house?

Febreeze actually does work. It eliminates the odors and would actually work without the perfume smell that they add to it. I spray down my couch and area rug once a week.

I just keep Sydney clean with bathing, keep the house itself clean with regular dusting, mopping, and candles/air wick/febreeze plug ins are my friends. When we had the puppy, it was hard to get the urine smell out, but daily regular cleaning does wonders with the candles and plug ins.

Baking soda. Spread over carpets and furniture, let sit overnight or all day then vacuum up.

Sunshine! It is amazing what the sun can do. I'm lucky that the main part of the house faces south. I have two cats and one dog. If your living area doesn't face the sun, I would try the baking soda.

Along with everything else said, there is a product called ozium that removes smells... http://www.cvs.com/shop/product-deta...t?skuId=188307

Coroners spray it to remove the smell of bodies, I'm sure it can remove the smell of dog.

I second the baking soda in the carpets...that always helps with set-in odors. I also find that washing all the linens (bed sheets and comforters, towels, etc) really helps freshen the house up. Even though our dog doesn't sleep on our bed, our comforters seem to collect that "dog funk."

I like to take a steam cleaner to our hardwoods, with a drop of essential oil in the water, just a quick mop-over, but you'll want to check if your kind of wood is ok with steam cleaning.

Febreeze also has an allergen reducer type....scent "free". While there is a very minor scent to it, it isn't strong or perfumey. Also it doesn't hurt to have an "air sponge" or two kicking around. Those along with mopping and especially vacuuming pretty much do the job for us in the main house.

Some people say that doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity, I call it training my dog

I just clean all the time. I also keep the dogs clean. Vacuum and scrub floors and do the laundry .... change the bedding ...wash throws on a regular basis. I use straight vinegar in a fine mist on the furniture once a week after I clean. I also use it in areas where I know the dogs tend to like to lay the most. Once the vinegar smell is gone ... everything smells really fresh! You cannot tell I have any dogs in my house at all!

My favorite all purpose cleaner is human and pet safe .... It is "Spic and Span" ... "Sun Fresh" scent on almost everything! Smells great!

I second (or fifth whatever lol) baking soda. If you leave for the weekend sprinkle it then use a broom and sweep it into the rug more. Also I put bowls of vinegar around for a bit and it really seems to clear the air. Also for furniture I throw sheets on them. Its not pretty but its amazing how much nastiness is on them when I wash them once a week. Also I just pull them off for company and poof clean couches!

Sunshine is a great cleaner. Just a half hour in the morning or afternoon before the bugs come in with the windows open makes a huuuge difference. I also squirt the girls down with a skin so soft/water mix. Does dual purpose and keeps the nats away when they're outside amd keeps them smelling nice inside. Its a constant battle of smells but I always worry about being the dog smelling house. Not fun.

I'm on the baking soda band wagon here.
I have 10 dogs and my house doesn't smell. I don't have any carpeting so that helps a lot. I simply mop regularly and have boxes of baking sitting in inconspicuous places throughout the house. I also have a few of those house plants that are supposed to help keep the air clean.
Oh, and I do burn a large scented candle in the evenings and that is the only thing one can ever smell when first entering - even in the day when it isn't burning. Its scent lingers and has such a fresh smell to it too.
So I say thumbs up to baking and scented candles.

I think first giving a bath your dog is more necessary than other works like wash covers. You can also any type of spray to beware from this smell.
