Chihuahuas. I hated them and if I new where they lived I would go on a different street. I had been bit, chased and growled out by numerous. Then my grandpa got one and I joined this forum and I love them!! Me and my mom have spent hours looking at breeders/rescues. My brother wants one so one may join the family soon. Also yorkies, same thing with them as chis. Plus the grooming. Also sight hounds. I just didn't like the look but I love them now. I will probably never own one due to me more than likely always having ferrets... but maybe someday.

Any small dog! I grew up with big dogs mostly. The smallest dog my family ever had was a Sheltie.

We got a small dog (Yorkie) as our first dog and I LOVE not having huge poops or having to buy expensive toys. I can take him on the plane and yet, he is still a hardcore little outdoorsy buddy!

Re: Breeds You Never Thought You'd Like

I'm not a fan of small dogs at all. I like mine BIG. Living on the rescue ranch though has me exposed to every breed that comes through the Rio Grande Valley. Right now we have a chi, I call her Li'l Shitsky, that I adore. She is all of 3lbs. Her feistiness and zest for life are so endearing. Then there's a Boston Terrier, Boston (how original, huh? lol), that I've gotten a bit attached to. He can have me rollin' with laughter in about 2.5 seconds.
So although I don't care for the small breeds in general how can one not fall in love with most any dog, regardless of breed, after getting to know its personality?

Sighthounds were never my favorite but I have met some really, really sweet greyhound that have me considering... I was also anti-little dog until my Aunt inherited "Buttons" AKA the cutest and most affectionate miniature poodle that ever lived. A bit of a yapper but nobody minds for some reason. At least I don't!

I said I would never own a dog smaller then 40 pounds. I have a cocker now and I'm absolutely head over heels for that dog. My next dog most likely will be a Cavalier. After that a Papillon. I plan on doing dog sports with all of them.

I won't say that I didn't like spaniels, but they were really never on my radar and I never considered owning one. If you had asked me what kind of dog I would end up with 10 years ago, I probably would've said Aussie or BC. A close friend had a Brittany when we were growing up, and so did DH, so that started me down the road of sporting dogs, and eventually led to Welsh springers. Now I'm a huge spaniel fan in general - such sweet, fun, happy little dogs. I love their coats (except the really excessive ones) and their nice medium size.

Like many here, I'm not into poodles because of their look, though I have heard so many good thing about standards. I met a couple at a training event last month and they were by far my favorite dogs there - so calm and laid back, yet fun and engaged in working with their people. Awesome dogs.

I never liked sighthounds...especially aesthetically...they never appealed to me.

But after living with a whippet and a pack of beezers for a year, I think a whippet or a greyhound could very well be a future dog...and I think Ibizans are gorgeous dogs

Small dogs. I guess seeing a small dog in a handbag put me off them. But since being on dog forums i have seen that they can be fun and lively, and i have being looking online about them as well. One day i would like to own a Pap, Yorkie and a Shih Tzu. I did think maybe a Westie, bit i see loads with brown stains on them which has put me off abit.

    Belgian Shepherds, specifically the Tervurens.

I was never a shepherd sorta gal until I met a customer's named Kenya. It was honestly love at first sight. That dog is SO devoted to her owner, it's ridiculous.

I also was one of those people who said they didn't want a dog smaller than 15 lbs. I always thought myself to be a medium/large breed person... but I have a 7.5 lbs pom mix, and I don't regret getting such a small dog lol. Lots of advantages, and they still act like dogs, so no complaints here, especially since I am an apartment dweller and I plan on living in apts for at least another 5-10 years.

    Sighthounds.

I clearly remember watching a dog show on TV as a kid and exclaiming how the greyhound was, like, the ugliest dog ever. Now I think they're gorgeous. And I'm getting a silken windhound as my next dog.

any dog under 20# until my mother got her designer pup about 6 years ago (shinoodle or pochin? half jap chin, half poodle). Still didn't like it until last month when mom put it into obedience class with my pup...Her dog was #1 and Manna was #2 in class. perfectly mannered now but it did go 6 years being the yappy biting thing I use to associate with small dogs. Because of her training and this forum I now know it's all int the training not the breed.

Pitbulls and small dogs. Before I started really liking dogs, I have to admit, the "pit bulls are evil" really crept into my conciousness, but now I can't think of a pittie I've met that I haven't liked (they're probably not for me as a breed though). Mia, Summer, Crystal, Lo, Kylie, and Meeko, as well as a shih tzu in our walking group, have all changed my mind about small dogs. Although I don't think i'd ever own only a small dog, those pups have definitely changed my views about small dogs!

Bostons excel at this. I have some trouble with Bug's physicality in her exuberance - but... The fact that I can't go for long without cracking up at her is totally worth the trade off.

This is the best compliment I believe any of my dogs have ever received. Thank you!

Pit Bulls/Terriers and small dogs for me too. After experiencing a lot of bias toward Buffy when she was a puppy and looked more Pit-like, I started to really look into the breed and to notice them around more and more. Now I think so many of them are such beautiful dogs, and I love meeting them. I think they're probably still too much dog for me though.

And my parent's Westie changed my opinion of smaller dogs. She's so cool and fun.

We share a backyard with a Boston Terrier named Bean. Everyone in my family, fiance included, agrees that it's the funniest dog ever. It occasionally gets off its tie-out and SPRINTS over to our yard while we're outside, grinning and snorting and bouncing and rolling, does some crazy little happy dance at us and Gyp to say hi, steals one of her toys, and SPRINTS back home. Haha. Every time, it's some variation of this.

Gyp doesn't get it at all. Neither do we, really. But everytime Bean visits, we end up laughing to stitches.

Bostons are freaking aliens, I swear. Some of it's that their expressions are distorted by their smashed in faces, sure, but a lot more of it just seems to be that every single one I have met or seen, Bug included, is WEIRD. It's a funny, awesome, quirky kind of bizarre, but between the sounds that come out of them, their expressions and the way they interact with the world you just can't help cracking the heck up at them.

NO DIGNITY AT ALL. I didn't think I liked that. Turns out I definitely can appreciate it. (Speaking of On Topic for the thread....)

I was the same way at first too with small dogs. I always wanted a medium sized dog, but after concluding that I couldn't have my dream dog (Golden) because of my allergies and my parents didn't want a big dog, plus the fact there aren't many medium sized hypoallergenic dogs (unless you count designer dogs and we weren't going in that direction), I started to like small dogs after that. And my dog doesn't act like a small dog at all! I would always hear people saying their small dogs acted big all the time, I never knew what they meant until now.

I used the dislike sighthounds because they were so skinny. I remember my dog encyclopedia when we looked for a dog when I was younger (mom wanted a sheltie or bassethound--but we ended up with an English cocker ) and being absolutely positive that the ugliest dog ever must be a Borzoi.

Now, I couldn't disagree more. I LOVE sighthounds, their character, their leanness, and I adore Borzoi.

I felt the same way about sighthounds - too skinny, ugly, and certainly not cuddly. Now, as I said, I want a greyhound.

Last week after one of our classes, there was a Borzoi in the lobby. Absolutely stunning dog and apparently one of several owned by the woman with him. If I hadn't had Katie, I certainly would have approached his owner to chat.

There was also an adorable Great Dane puppy. All gangly and awkward, but huge compared to the other puppies (and some dogs).
