I couldn't watch past the intro. Any program where they show you dog bite marks in the first 8 seconds is not going to be my cup of tea.

    Re: Alpha Dog TV show

Can I get some more details? What channel is it on and what time? Now that I'm in college, I don't have Dish or the recording features anymore, if I get to see something its either the last 5 minutes of something I'm not interested in, or its on Hulu. And that show is not on Hulu.

Oh darn I forgot to turn it on and take a peek at it. Same as Kodi...what time and channel is it on? Also what day?
After I see it, I can tell you all what I think as well.

winniec777---I read somewhere that it's about military and police dogs, so of course they're going to show bite marks. But what made it bad for you about that and what was wrong with the intro? I didn't see it, so I'm just curious as to what you thought before you turned it off.

Sorry, Spirit. I should have mentioned that I have an extremely weak stomach for seeing dog aggression and how it's handled. They flashed an image of a man's arm with some pretty painful looking bites, followed by a bunch of men struggling with a dog. So I turned it off. I've watched videos of protection sports with no problem, but I know what that is and trust (mostly) the people to know what they are doing with their highly-trained dogs. Awesome stuff and I'm guessing accidents do happen even in these situations. But the show seemed to be promoting that aspect of it. Again, not my cup of tea. If others post and say it's not really that at all, I'll give it another shot, though.

The struggling with dog was to get the dog off handler's arm. No more-no less. That was accomplished and a new handler was introduced to dog and all ended well.

Winniec77 - these are working dogs - either K9 trained or some other training. They aren't being trained for ringsports or anything along those lines.

The point is that some of these dogs are taught to bite. Which makes them dangerous in the wrong hands.

The show wasn't really "promoting" the bite work. In fact, most of the time was spent showing dogs doing other work. If you would have watched the show, you would have seen them working on 'transitioning' with some dogs and handlers - that is, taking the dogs from bite mode to control mode so that they could do other work. That is a very important part of working with these dogs, and the handler has to learn how to do it. The bite that they showed was on an inexperienced handler who didn't pay attention to how to do that and got bit in the process.

The same dog later in the show was given to an experienced handler who immediately put the dog on a track. Even the trainers didn't think the dog could do that with a new handler so soon. The team did a perfect track - which shows the problem was the original handler, not the dog.

One problem I had with the show was that except for some early TEDD training, they didn't really show any of the early training that these dogs get. Maybe I missed it but I don't recall seeing any . Most of the dogs had obviously gone through a lot of training. One shouldn't get the idea that these dogs learned that on their own.

Well Im watching it now...love my DVR lol. I recorded it as soon as I saw the commercial, I love watching dogs work hard closely with people. Plus, I can't even get my dog to sit and look what these guys are getting theres to do. lol. So its cool seeing what they are capable of, of course in 30 minutes I might comment back on this thread and say the show sucked. lol.

    Re: Alpha Dog TV show

I have two concerns with the show.

First, the title itself reenforces the "alpha" dominance idea.

Second, while I understand that such rough and intense training is necessary for these dogs, I'm concerned that some ignorant people will try to use the same techniques on the family dog. The result of such could be quite dangerous. As I said in another thread, it would be like sending a first grader to USMC boot camp.

Actually it's funny 10 people can watch something and all see different things. I saw nothing rough at all, just a businesslike program to get a dog to quickly release the wanna-be K9 handler. I especially liked the read of the dog as it was a excited/reactive type bite program. One must be a tad careful when handling a bite dog. (experience helps a bunch)

Yep, I loved it. I didn't see anything rough at all in the two episodes I watched. Even the crazy lab they couldn't get to work correctly, no rough handling, jerking, or anything, just patience.

I've never heard of it. What is it? We don't get cable or satellite TV, just an antenna on the roof for broadcast and whatever we stream through Netflix, Amazon, etc...

Actually, I didn't see much training at all - that was my complaint about the show. Maybe they did use "rough and intense training" but since they didn't show any K9 training, I don't know how you can draw any conclusions. The only training that I saw was some TEDD training and as far as I could tell, it was done very positively without any abuse to the dogs.

As far as what ignorant people will do, all I can say is that ignorant people don't need a TV show to be ignorant, they can do that on their own.

Yes as if a non-ignorant Joe Average doesn't have enough to worry about getting through life, now he/she should start worrying about TV shows and stupidity.

    Re: Alpha Dog TV show

I saw a couple episodes. Have to say, I was disappointed it was a show more about the three trainers then about following different dogs through the training.

I'd be interested to hear what GSD and Malinois people think about the show. I mean... I saw a few of those breeds working on the first 2 episodes and for the next 48 hours, all I could think about was getting one as my next dog. And I KNOW these breeds are way too much for me!! But seeing those dogs working was amazing. I can't imagine the regular Joe Schmo Nat Geo Watcher seeing this show, thinking, "Wow, those are really cool dogs!" and buying the first Mal or GSD he sees in the Classified ads of his city newspaper...

Watching a show called "Alpha Dog" would go pretty much against everything I believe in. So no.

The shows too much about the drama and not enough training... But, frankly I do not like the idea of casual dog owners seeing the progressions for bite work.....Nimrods will be trying it at home.....
