Unhappy should i neuter my year old cocker spaniel

hi all, i have just signed up to this site, it is a super resource and i am looking for some advice please. i have a 13 month old cocker spaniel called henry who up till the last month has been a very sociable chap and very good mannered bar the usual chewing etc. 2 things have happened in the last month which i feel have changed his personality, firstly 3 weeks ago we went on holiday for 2 weeks, i didnt put him in kennels but got my friend, whom henry adores, to stay here at home with him, they got on well and henry didnt appear to miss me, although has got extremely territorial and barky then last sunday i was at a friends house who has a dog the same age and didnt realise thaqt her bitch was in heat and henry was trying to mount her constatly so i brought him home, since then he has been totally hyper and frisky and really aggresive when people approaching us out walking and even at the neighbours chilldren, in fact i dont rust him and cant let him off the lead at all, he is like a different dog and i'm at my wits end. i have considered neutering him but is he too old now, will it make a difference? i would love to show him and unfortunetly cant if hes neutered but would sacrifice that as i want my good natured boy back. can anyone please advise me ?

You can show him in all but Confirmation, I think. Unless you are totally dedicated to Confirmation, it's a lot of hard work. Unless your dog came from countless champions, the odds are that he wouldn't win anyway. Not trying to be mean here, just pratical.

I would neuter him if it was me, but it's absolutely a personal choice. Years ago I worked for a Schnauzer breeder/handler. It was an unbelievable amount of work.

To really answer your question, 13 months is not too old to neuter. I'm not sure there's even an age limit on this procedure

hi val, many thanks for replying. in ireland for all showing male dogs need to be entire which is a shame but i suppose the whole idea of showing is to perpetuate a good breed, i dont really have any interest in breeding it would be more for the prestige, he is a very handsome dog and his grandmother was a crufts champion. i have read on some site that its best to neuter around 7 months but will ring my vet tomorrow and chat to him, thanks again

Which is more important? Showing and controlling or not showing and having a good companion?

Answer my question and you'll have the answer to yours.

Sounds like Henry's hormones have kicked in. As already stated, if you're not determined to show him, Henry would be better off being neutered. He'll be happier and healthier in the long run. It's not too late to have the procedure done. Glad you're going to check on it.

Sorry, didn't know you were in Ireland...I've always wanted to visit there!

We have the what amounts to the same thing here in the states. Confirmation is for the prestige and to perpetuate good breeding, and yes they have to be intact. For obedience, agility, local confirmation (only) and the sports (tracking, flyball) they don't have to be, normally.

Also, here in the states we aren't as picky about when to spay and neuter. I just got my dog and they think she's about 2 but since she was from the shelter, she had to be spayed before I could take her home. She seems to be fine with it and so I'm happy to have had it done. In most cases, no matter the age of a shelter dog, they must be fixed to be able to be adopted. I think it would help him but of course you do need to talk with your vet as well.

It's definitely not too late to neuter. He will be happier, and you will be happier. Good luck!

You should neuter him, it will help his behavior alot.Plus it could save his life, as dogs can smell a bitch in heat from like a mile a way (I think thats how far it was) and he could take off out the door, climb a fence or pull off a leash going after the smell and could get hit my a car.

Okay, guys? It's conFORMation. Not confirmation.

Okay, to the OP- it's your call. I'd think pretty seriously about how much you care about showing in conformation. Is there some other venue you cuold do instead, that interests you? (Field work, obedience, agility, freestyle/heelwork to music, rally-o, flyball, tracking?) If you want to stick with conformationt hough, I'd give your boy a few days to settle down and step up the obedience training and probably implement NILIF- Nothing In Life Is Free. It's totally possible to live with an intact male dog and expect him to be a well-behaved model citizen, but it does take a little more training- and the faults in your dog's temperament and training (if he's got any- and most dogs do, frankly) will be magnified.

It's a hard decision to make. Personally? I'd take your time. Talk to your mentor, your dog's breeder, and your vet. Talk to your trainer, if you've got one. (And if you don't, I'd get one!). I'd give him 6 months of serious obedience training and NILIF and see what happens. He may just be going through a (slightly late, but not horribly so) teenaged bratty phase. Or he may be showing his adult temperament. Right now, you don't know. So find out, and make your decision based on that. The fact that you're NOT intending to breed him gives you a lot more freedom for this decision- if you were, I'd be encouraging you to neuter him as I don't think his temperament sounds appropriate to the breed- but I think his behavior can certainly be molded into a showable, enjoyable companion with work on your part. Neutering him would save you the work, but if you enjoy the show ring and he does as well, I think I'd try and keep doing that after taking some time off and doing some retraining.

Sounds to me a boy become a man if you know what I mean. I don't know about showing. Yes removing his man hood would help . This won't stop him trying but he'll fire blamks if he does and no un wanted puppys will be the result if you don't.

The Frisky after would just his male ego as to say bring them on I want more. My answer is yes for the chop , cross legs fellas

I honestly don't know much about showing, but it seems as though, by 13 months, most would have already started down that path with their dog if they were going to. From what you've written, it doesn't sound as though you two have started any kind of formal preparations towards showing. If you have, if the dog can stand properly (I think it's called stacking?), walk properly for a handler, stay still for the judge to examine, etc, I'd get him in some shows and see how he does.

If not... I'd just go for the neuter. It's never too late. At my vets, we've neutered dogs in their teens.

Re: should i neuter my year old cocker spaniel

Hi I have two entiire males whom I show and even if I did not show I would still not have them neutered unless for health reasons. I am in the UK too and having him neutered although it stops proecreation it does not stop the urge . Ths choice is yours at the end of the day, but if you are a responsible dog owner you will make sure he does not add to the unwanted dog population without being neutered, mine never have added to this and I have had entire males for over 25 years. If you decide to go ahead and have him done he is def not too old, but I would really think carefully before coming to a decision. Yes you can still show him and depending on the judge he may still win something but if he is up against an entire dog who is as good or almost as good as your dog nine times out of ten the judge will go for the entire dog. Feeling on neutering differ so much from person to person and country to country.

I do not breed nor will I ever do so I just think if its not broken don't fix it.
