My wife just called. She's getting acquainted with Maddie, the new long-haired dachshund at my son's house.

She asked what I was doing, and I was able to report that we just returned from the beach. "Very good," she said.

She didn't ask if I'd mowed the lawn, watered the garden, painted the fence or done any of the other things that need doing here.

I have not, BTW. Dog-sitting for my own dogs is a full-time job. Tonight we might build a fire in the firepit and roast marshmallows and share ghost stories.

    That's so sweet!
My mum was like that with Fearghas. She complained we're not home enough (which someone is home all the time), who would watch him when we went to highland games to compete (my sister in law). When I told her SIL would dog sit, she grumbled, "well I could help". Three days later a card addressed to the dog arrived in the mail from my mum. She calls regularly to see how her grandsons (human, canine and feline) are fairing.
