Best Dog Food for Itchy Labrador

    Hi Guys,

The food I buy at the store makes my Labrador itchy all over and he gets a lot of gunk in his eyes. Is there a brand I can buy at a store or order on the internet you would recommend without a Rx?

What are you feeding now? Has he seen a vet?

Grain-free (like Taste of the Wild) might help but, without knowing for sure if your dog has food allergies, and which foods he's allergic to, it's a shot on the dark.

I've been feeding him different brands of their lamb and rice varieties, it is definitely better than the non-lamb & rice dog food but not a complete fix. I've fed him Purina, Eukenuba, Beneful, Iams, etc..

Yes the vet tried selling me $100 per 25 lb bag Science diet XD? I was looking for something more affordable.. I'm sure there has to be another option that would work.. the problem is all these Petsmart & Target pet foods that say "Lamb & Rice" are "with Lamb & Rice" and have other bad stuff. What about an all natural duck recipe?

IF you think your dog has an allergy(which my lab has) the foods your feeding him are crap, well their crap anyway without allergies. I also wouldn't feed the vets food, its crappy and over priced. As far as I know no one here feeds SD in any form its just crap. For my allergy dog I have tried the following foods, now they may not work for your dog and you may or may not see a result quickly.
Taste of the Wild-is the food that worked wonders for him. I can use any formula but like the Pacific Stream best.
    Orijen6 Fish-what he's eating now
    Wellness Core
    Natures Variety Instinct Chicken
    Natural Balance LID foods
Raw- He wouldn't eat this for some reason unless it was off the bone.
Avoderm-he wouldn't eat this at all
    Annameat
EVO before it was bought out
    Canine Caviar
I am getting ready to try Evangers Pheasent and Brown Rice.
I got a sample bag of Ziwipeak and while he loved it the cost is out of my range for feeding a lab,but it is a wonderful food.

For the most part, you won't find the foods you need at the big box pet stores and you most certainly won't find them at grocery stores or Wal-Mart.

I get Taste of the Wild at a farm co-op. Tractor Supply stores usually carry it. It will cost more than Purina, but it will require smaller servings and it won't break the bank.

Okay great, I just bought two 30 lb bags of Taste of the Wild, the Salmon & the Bison on Wag.com and coupon code for your first order "WAGPET" so each bag was only $40 and free shipping (over $49 had to buy two of them).. not bad at all...$80 for 60 lbs of premium dog food.. I hope it cures his itches I can afford this stuff. Plus I did not like the way the vet described the science diet rx food she said it was 100% synthetic or something like that?

While we are on the topic.. I have heard oil is a non-issue with allergenic dogs and I generally add it to their food to keep their coats shiny.. is any brand or type of oil better or worse? I usually feed them the generic brand vegetable oil I use for everyday cooking but if I'm out sometimes I'll give them some of my good Extra Virgin Olive Oil.. do either of these pose a problem to an allergenic dog? I also give them fried or boiled eggs and a teaspoon of plain or vanilla yogurt fairly regularly.. either of these a problem?

Salmon oil will be your best bet but with a good food your shouldn't need it at all.

I agree with katielou. With TOTW, you wont need any supplements. I think you'll be very happy with the new food. It might take awhile to see a difference, so be patient.
