Urinary incontinence in 11 month old puppy

    Hey,

I am asking this on behalf of a friend.

Her maltese (11 months old), spayed at around 5-6 months old, is suffering from Urinary incontinence.

The maltese is trained to go and do her business on pee-pads, but from time to time, she "leaks" urine, especially when excited or scared.

For example, when someone tries to go over and play with her and she gets excited, she might (not all the time) leak urine.

Or when say my friend is using the vacuum or drop some stuff, such as books, which makes a loud noise and startle the dog, she will leak urine too.

she often bends over to lick her own urine. is this going to be a health issue?

I had read somewhere spayed females often suffer Urinary incontinence. Some people also told her that Urinary incontinence in puppies are normal, but this dog is already 11 months old.
Is this serious or it'll get better over time?

It sounds more like submissive urination than incontinence. Does she ever have a puddle underneath her when she gets up from laying on something, or does it only happen when she gets excited/scared?

This would be submissive peeing, my female did this until she well over a year old.

Yes my JRT did this too and has just recently stopped (at 1.5 years) although every now and then she will pee in the garage when I am putting her leash on her.

My 7 month old mix dog does it all the time, she pees a little everytime she gets excited.

Yes, not incontinence, but excited urination/submissive urination. When you know something might excite her, like the vacuum, or visitors have arrived, try to put her on the pads to let her empty her bladder first, that way it might not be so bad.

It doesn't hurt her to lick her own urine... altho you might not like it.

Treat the leaks as if fear driven, and slowly introduce her to the things that cause the submission. It should get better when she's older.
