    Question Dog wont eat?

Two days ago, my husband and I adopted a one year old German wire haired pointer.
She's an incredible dog, so goofy and loving, she can't get enough attention. But she wont eat!! All she's had since we got her were maybe two dog treats (she prefers to carry them around with her, or offer them to us after we've taken her for a walk, not actually eat them)

The shelter gave us a small bag of food that she was apparently eating there, Hill's Science Diet Advanced Fitness formula.

She's completely normal in every other way, she's very active, playful, loving.. She even pooped this morning. I'm just concerned. Could it just be her adjusting to a new home? Could it be that she's stressed out that we're going to leave her? (She had two previous owners, and she dislikes being left alone for any period of time)

Thanks for any help anyone would be able to offer!

She could be adjusting, very possible My Belle stoped eating after she got spayed, I started to mix a little canned food (I used Alpo or Pedigree) in with her dry kibble and that did the trick. Now she's back to eating dry food just fine Good luck, glad she found a good home

    Thanks for the reply!

I was going to try mixing her food with a little water to soften it up, if that doesn't work maybe I'll get some wet dog food.

I agree that she's probably just adjusting. You could add yogurt instead of canned food. We do that with Harper, but only for his dinner, not the rest of his feedings.

    Re: Dog wont eat?

It is really common for dogs in a new environment to go off their food for a few days. Even when I housesit in their own homes, some dogs go "off" for at least two meals and then settle in fine. She won't starve herself. Give her time to settle in and don't worry TOO much about it.
I have found that adding a little low sodium chicken broth can help to encourage eating of the kibbles...

Also remember that her personality is likely not fully showing at this point either..it can take weeks or even months for a dog to feel truly comfortable enough to "open up". Good luck with your new girl, and thanks for rescuing!

I say she's adjusting and for a few days its nothing to worry about. The whole transition is very stressful for the dogs (and the humans! )

If you plan to change her food, get the new food now so you can start mixing it in with the Science Diet food (SD isn't a very high quality food, there are much better options for the price). That too might tempt her into eating more.

Make sure you take her to the vet the first week (most shelters require this) for a general checkup and have the vet get a good look at her teeth. There is a possibility of a sore tooth. Wetting her food could give you a clue if its uncomfortable for her to eat dry kibble.

If she quits drinking water or gets lethargic or otherwise "weak", then call a vet.

My dog (cocker) did the same thing when we broght her home (4yrs ago), but I also did what Emily445455 did and mixed wet food with her dry and she ate just fine and now we just feed her dry food and she eats every bite of it.

I've had the same problem with my pup the first week she only finished a bowl of food, i had to hand feed her sometimes cause I worried she wasn't going to have enough energy. Now i can't get her to stop eating =P
