My husband and I are having trouble potty training our 8 week old puppy. I know it doesn't happen over night but he will not poop outside. We have tried taking him outside but he wont step out on to the grass by himself and will only stick to the concrete. We try to encourage him as much as possible to run around and 'go potty', but still he wont. We give him a Treat when he pee's outside trying to encourage him but still but its not working. We stood outside for an hour today with him and nothing the minute we opened the door to go back in he pooped straight away. We would rather not get training pads for him as we don't want to encourage pooping or peeing in the house at all. We both had dogs growing up but both our parents took care of the training aspects. This is our first dog and want things to go as smoothly as possible.

At 8 weeks he's still a tiny baby and you can't have had him for very long. Potty training will be months long, so don't sweat a few accidents the first couple days. You are just getting to know each other.

Just set him on the grass and keep him on leash short enough that he can move around but must stay on the grass. Try walking around too, it gets things moving. And take him out to poop right after a meal.

I took Truffles outside every hour unless he was sleeping and I woke up in the middle of the night three times to take him out to potty. My SO and I both came home from work for lunch so he wasn't alone for more than 2 hours and so he could potty. Pretty sure I spent more time with him outside pottying than I did in my own apartment. I did that for a month (he was 14 weeks at that point) and started to let him out every 2 hours and wake up twice in the middle of the night to take him out. I kept doing that for another month and a half and I stopped waking up in the middle of the night to pee but continued to take him out ever 2 hours. He's 9 months and I just started taking him out every 3-4 hours about two weeks ago.

Potty training sucks. It really does and for some dogs it's permanently established in their brains at 6 months and for some it takes time for them to really get it. Always prevent accidents by watching for signs (sniffing, circling, going away from toys or you to a private area). Always keep your eyes on the pup. If you can't, crate him. Every accident is a set back in my experience. Also, if he does have an accident, use an enzymatic cleaner on that area. If he smells that he did his business there at all, he'll want to go there again.
