I think my neutered dog is marking?

Quick background. I have two dogs, a 1yo Great Pyrenees neutered male, Cthullu, and a 6yo(est) Dachshund/Miniature Pincher intact male, Otto. Otto is going in for his vet check and to schedule his neuter on Tuesday. Here's the problem. When we first got Otto, he marked around the house. We couldn't afford to have him fixed at the time, and didn't know if we were keeping him or not. I know I should have just gotten him fixed straight off, but it just wasn't possible. So instead, after a lot of training, we managed to control his marking. I won't say he was 100%, but it was predictable, ie don't set the new piece of furniture at his level until it smells like our house, keep your shoes in the closet, and if you visit a house with other dogs, take your dirty clothes straight to the hamper. We still had a few accidents here and there, but they were few and far between. I was worried that he would start marking when we got the new dog, but he didn't. If fact, his accidents in the house completely went away. (He did pee directly on Cthullu the first time they were in the yard together, lol, but no marking inside) But about 2 weeks ago, I started finding spots in random places. The pillow on the couch, the middle of the living room, the side of the refrigerator... 3 days ago, someone peed in the middle of our bed. Because of the size difference of the urine stains, and the fact that Otto isn't neutered, I assumed that these little piddles were from Otto. So we went back to potty training 101, and for the past 3 days Otto has had constant supervision, or been locked up. And I scheduled his vet appointment to get his neuter done with. BUT, and here's the big but, last night, a few hours after I had put Otto away for the night, I got up to get a drink and stepped in urine. There was a dribble line in front of the TV in the middle of the living room carpet. I looked like Otto had done it, because of how small it was, but that's not possible. So it had to be Cthullu, only I can't figure out how such a big dog could piddle such a small amount. And, he's fixed. He's been fixed since we got him, and he doesn't even mark on walks. He's a one shot pee-er, where Otto is a pee on ever pole, tree, and fence kind of dog. But it has to be Cthullu. So, why would a neutered male suddenly decide to start marking in the house, how can such a big dog pee such small amounts, and other then the obvious of supervision and having Otto fixed, what can I do to stop this? I'm already planning on cleaning the carpets with nature's miracle as soon as I get my grandma's carpet cleaner again.

Re: I think my neutered dog is marking?

I'd have him checked by the vet for a UTI or other bladder problems.

And, sorry if you mentioned it, but how long have you had the intact dog? I wonder if just having him around makes the other one feel the need to mark. But, I don't think being neutered really matters much for the dog that's marking. My fixed female marks like crazy when we're on walks, though not in the house thankfully.

    Yep. This.

Definitely get him checked for a UTI, but marking is behavioral. Being fixed won't stop a dog from marking, especially once they get into the habit of it. None of my dogs mark inside (and this includes the intact, pushing 6, year old male). Outside he does, but then so does the spayed female.

As has been said, he could have a UTI but...
Neutering doesn't really stop the things it's supposed to. MANY male dogs will still hump and mark and mount and chase females even after they've been neutered. Sometimes it cuts down on this, sometimes it doesn't.

Not to hijack but how do you know a female is marking? What does this behavior look like? Is it just frequented all over the place?

Frequent, small amounts and with a lifted leg in bug's place. Just not lifted as high as Jack's.

Cider squats and lifts a leg when she feels like it. She's managed to mark on things indoors. Often in front of people. It's rare but it happens. Spayed at 6 months..

A male neutered at 6 mos that doesn't mark or hump ... can 'learn' to mark and to hump a few years later :-)

LOL. Cider always took 500 pees per walk. She selectively marks things though. I was horrified a few years ago. We went to an agility trial, stayed over night for 2 night in a motel. We were settling in.. and she marked the pillow on my bed. Caught her instantly and we had a come to jesus meeting and I cleaned it. But so unimpressed..

Females can still hike a leg, males can still squat to pee. I don't know if hiking a leg is necessarily required for marking but it is really the easiest way for them to get urine on a vertical surface.

Well hell lol. Any chance of me not having to deal with this. During Lucy's life? And what can you do about it?

I had a femal spayed cat mark my house like crazy many years ago due to stress. Antidepressant cured her right up. I REALLY don't want to deal with that again if at all possible.

It's not likely going to have to be something you worry about.
My female is 5 and has never marked a day in her life. I know plenty of other bitches (spayed and not) who have never lifted their leg.

Not only will Buffy sometimes lift her leg, she'll lift up her whole back end to try to pee on a tree or whatever. But, like I said, luckily she only does it when we're out on walks and not in the house. I just try to discourage her by continuing to walk, and not stopping to indulge her every time she wants to pee.
