Ok I feel REALLY stupid right now and need some help....

See we found out a few days ago how to get Rocky our Boston Terrier to play... he loves chasing my RC truck around the house.... I know...probably stupid but he loved the chase and delight at finally catching it....

So today in my stupidity, I took my truck outside and Rocky and I had a great time... he was a whirling dirvish chasing after my lil truck... but when we got back inside I noticed a spot of blood on his leg and cleaned it up... looking to see if he had cut himself.... but nothing....

later on I noticed he was limping a bit and checked his leg again.... nothing...

then I looked again... knowing there had to be something, and that is when I discovered he had chunk of one of his paw pads scrubbed off... I can only imagine he did it chasing the truck from our driveway (asphalt) to the grass and back....

I feel awful.... and have no idea what I should due to treat it... I cleaned it well and such, but what else can I do? He hasn't whined or growled or anything... but it is definitely tender and and he is doing his best to keep off of it (limping slightly)....

I feel stupid, stupid, stupid.....please help!

Matt, Wendy, and Rocky

Aww...poor puppy...it might not be entirely your fault though!

Try taking Rocky to the vet. They can bandage up his leg and give him an antibiotic or some cream/anthespetic for it. I'm not sure because this has never happened to be, but just call your vet for more info on what to do and maybe take him into the clinic if they want to check him out.

Good luck! Hope he feels better!

Pad injuries aren't uncommon - especially in working dogs or dogs that run/play on rough surfaces. A trip to your vet may be a good idea - especially if it's a large enough chunk that you are worried about infection. From the pic, it doesn't look too bad though. I'd keep it clean and dry (a challenge with pad injuries!). You can try putting a baby sock on that foot when he goes outside to keep dirt out or just use a bit of vet wrap for trips outside. Otherwise, I'd just clean it with warm soapy water once or twice a day and rinse/dry really well. You can also use a spray on antibiotic (something that will dry b/c a topical cream will pick up every piece of dirt it touches). I keep EMT gel spray (google it) in the house for these sorts of injuries.

Pads tend to heal pretty quickly if you can keep them from running/walking on pavement for a while.

I agree... if I went to the vet everytime a pad got scraped, my vet would have that new boat he's looking at :)

Wash it periodically, dump some hydrogen peroxide on it after cleaning, and then keep an eye on it for infections. It most likely will heal right up.

I will have to get some of that... and I do have a appointment with the vet this morning to just get it checked out.

Thing is, this is one of the few things we have been able to get him interested in since bringing him home. He honestly knew nothing about play when we brought him home, we tried squeekie toys, balls, everything....he just didn't play. Then about 4 days ago, I was repairing one of my trucks and it hopped off the table and he started chasing it about the house...he had a lot of fun... running and running trying to catch it. So we decided to take it outside to have more room... and then this.

I guess my question is.... am I developing a BAD habit having him chase the truck?

If not, then I'll just take him over to our local ball field next time... he can run their on the dirt on the infeild and grass and that shouldn't be as hard on his pads as our driveway....

We want him to get excercise and have fun and play.... he doesn't chew anything (yet)....whatya tyhink?

If he keeps getting injured when playing with the truck, I suggest you find something else to interest him. It sounds like he likes to chase things, maybe going to a field and rolling a tennis ball and hav him bring it back to you? It's like fetch on the ground, so he could chase it. Let me know how things work out.
