How to get puppy to go into crate on her own?

My Lhasa Apso pup is 11 weeks old which I have for almost 2 weeks. She doesn't fight when I put her in the crate nor does she whine during the night, but I've been unsuccessful with trying to get her to go in there on her own. I'd really appreciate your suggestions. Thanks.

Re: How to get puppy to go into crate on her own?

    Every dog is an individual.

My dogs all make their first ride to our home in a crate in the car. They sleep in the crate from the first night on. A crate is just a fact of life at our house. So I have not put them in there for increasing time or done anything special to make it a happy place. But all of their crates are in the family room and we leave the doors open on them when they are not in the crate to be confined (at night or when we are gone).

To start with I will bait the crate with a special treat or smear a bit of peanut butter on the back wall (I have the plastic type of crates). I just say "go crate" and help them in until they do it on their own.

And just to give you an idea, some of my dogs have gone into the crate on their own by day 2, some it takes a few weeks, and we currently have had one dog for over 1.5 years and she still needs to be taken to her crate.

Yet all of our dogs will go into their open crates to nap or take a prized bone/toy when they want to be left alone.

Does she have a chew toy she likes? Let her see you with it and let her see you put that in the crate. When you feed her, put the food in the crate. Do these things with the door open so she can come and go.

Will she chase a ball or a toy? If you are playing with her accidentally throw it in the crate for her to chase.

Don't force any of these games. The idea is for her to go in on her own and not be shut in every time.

You can also thro a dog treat in the crate and she can follow that in there. As you do this you can start to add a word such as "crate" or "kennel" soo she goes in by herself when you say that word.

Are you using a clicker? If you want to learn how to train with a clicker go to www.clickertraining.com and check it out. You can use the clicker to teach the dog that the crate = good things like food or a toy.

There is a good book "Crate Games" that you can get from dogwise.com. I recommend you get this book.

Thanks for the advice and sorry it took so long to reply. First of all, I've kept one of her chew toys in the crate all the time. Do I take this out every day for her to see me put it in the crate?
I am trying with throwing dog treats into the crate and also trying with tossing in her ball when playing. She'll go part way in to retrieve it and bring it out. I guess this is a start.
