Why does my puppy Hate her crate?

    Hello everybody!

I have a question which I would really like answerred

We just adopted a Husky puppy a couple of weeks ago, we have been trying to crate train her but this is not going so well. initially she just hated the crate when it was closed, she would sleep there without problems when the door was open. but, as she starts to eat shoes etc, nothing really drastic but we cannot leave her run loose at night, we need her to learn to sleep there at night with closed doors.

this is horror, she wines all night (not a joke). we walk her at least 1 time at night around 4 to make sure she doesn't have any accidents in the cage, but when we returns we are rewarded with at least 2 hours of crying.

and to top it off, she doesn't want to go into the cage anymore during the day either when we leave the doors open

I do know that we have to ignore it, which we do, but I would really appreciate any help on this matter!

    THX

Re: Why does my puppy Hate her crate?

One trick i did with my puppy (he's 9 weeks now) is i used treats with him.
I put him in closed the door, after a minute or 2 the first time, as long as he didn't whine, he was rewarded. I gradually made the time longer till he was rewarded. And soon enough, he started sleeping just fine in his crate without needing to be rewarded. I've also noticed he likes it better when i cover it at night as well, I guess its more "den" like for him that way. He also sleeps better when he has his favorite toy (a squeaky sock monkey) as well, i guess it comfort.

    Thanks Jax's Mommy,

especially the covering up of the crate is interesting, we haven't done that yet. I am gonna try that tonight. the treating part is probably a good idea too, the problem with that is just that it means that I have to stay awake all night to reward Hunter

but I'll ask my wife to try that now while I am at work

Covering the crate def helped for me too, My puppy cried all night long for a few nights, treats didint work she is more satisfied with praise/cuddles for her reward but covering half her crate was an instant success, also her fav hard chew toy, i know it says no toys in the crate on the box it came in but it really helped her having something to do/cuddle and iv hid one of my t shirts under her blanket so she can still smell me, bit more comfort too
Good luck i know i found the cries heart breaking

Re: Why does my puppy Hate her crate?

Well, becides the crying is very sad, and that the crate is in our bedroom I am really affraid that the neighbores will get angry. I have already prepared to cover the crate tonight, I really hope this will work! I also read that light music helps, any experiences?

the strange this is that sometimes there are nights that we get lucky and we can sleep for about 4 hours straight (one night even 2 times 4 hours!!). I hope these rare occasions will happen more and more in the near future. we were well prepared when we choose to adopt a Husky, we don't mind the long walks in the morning and at night, which we also hoped would make her a bit tired, but it doesn't seem to take the energy away to cry so much....

But we still love her to death, there is no way I can get angry at her, regardless of the current frustrations

    I've never tried music.
My pups crate is also in our room.

I'd say if the neighbors seem upset by it, just tell them you just adopted a puppy. Also, that you are working on crate training the puppy and are working on keeping him quiet.
From my experience with that, it seems to work. Once I explained to them they seemed to be more understanding with it. it's worth a try

Re: Why does my puppy Hate her crate?

    Welcome!
First, your puppy is still settling in, that will probably account for some of this. Everything is different for her now, she misses her old life, and her new life is filled with new sights, sounds, smells, people, etc.

Second, you don't necessarily have to stay up all night to give the treats. Just use the treats randomly throughout the day to help her associate the crate with good things. Night time will probably remain scary for a bit, for her.
You've already gotten some good tips: covering the crate, putting an unwashed piece of your clothing in the crate to comfort her, radio, also try a kitchen timer (not in the crate, just near the crate) or a fan (for the white noise type sound).

Also, try to exercise her before bedtime so that may she'll be tired enough to just fall asleep and stay asleep.
Are you starting any training? Mental stimulation (training) can be just as tiring as physical stimulation, too! So, maybe try a walk in the evening, some brisk play, and a short training session to tire her out.

If you're worried about your neighbors, try writing a note to them, explaining your situation, letting them know you're working on it. And baking some cookies for them can't hurt!

Re: Why does my puppy Hate her crate?

Good Advice all around, Thank you so much everybody!

Yesterday we had a good night, the ironic part is just that we had a dinner planned in a restaurant so we had to leave for 2 hours. we gave her a "kong" toy stuffed with food and I taped the whole session (in the cage). seriously, not 1 sound in 2 hours and 15 minuted!!!!! so there goes my worry about the neighbores

and the advice of covering the crate was a real revelation. we also gave the kong again with minimum amount of food just for the transition from awake to asleep and she did not cry at all last night. I pray to god that this was not a one time deal, but at least we got 1 night of good sleep.

about the walking, we walk her for an hour in the morning, 3 times half an hour during the day, 1 hour or more before going to sleep and half an hour at 4 in the morning. next to that we are training sit, down, come, etc. every day a couple of times. so there should be stimulation enough

Again thanks for all the advice and as long as this threat stays still it means it is going very well!

Re: Why does my puppy Hate her crate?

I'm glad to hear it's working out Another tip you could use is have "crate time." Some people use the crate to discipline their dogs, which in the end, will make the dog end up thinking that s/he was put in the crate as a punishment. But puppies probably want to spend time with you, too. But this behaviour is only a phase! Put her in for 10+ minutes a few times per day, and a simple "Shh!" would probably calm her down a bit. For each bark, "Shh!"-- and the treat thing was a good idea. Reward her each time she DOESN'T bark.
