Well, since I can't see them I'm going to wager you have two puppies playing like puppies. It gets loud and there is a lot of bitey face. The thing you have to remember though is that you have a Chihuahua (and teacups are dishes, not dogs) and a much larger dog. Play will always have to be supervised and there is always going to be an off chance the little one could get hurt. I have an 84 lbs dog and an 11 lbs dog who on the off chance they do play I am watching them directly.

Dogs will usually tell other dogs when they've had enough. My Dachshund will snark at my big guy when he's being rough, or if he slams him/steps on him.

Abbylynn is 65 pounds and plays with 11.6 pound Eddee ... but she is very gentle ... I am just lucky. I always supervise play and if I see the play wants to escalate ... play time is over and on to something else.

The bully - type breeds (bulldogs, pits, boxers, etc.) play very differently than other breeds of dogs. I've had several boxers in my life, and if you didn't know better, you'd think they were fighting. They play VERY rough. They often get in trouble at dog parks and daycare for this reason, b/c other dogs don't appreciate this play style. I only had one boxer that could play gently with my daughter's yorkie poo. He'd get down on his elbows to play with this little one - so funny to watch! Another boxer I had was very rough with my poodle, and the poodle had to learn to stand up for himself. Eventually, the poodle could actually pin the boxer down as a correction, when the boxer's play got out of hand! Who said that poodles were foo-foo dogs, lol! Watch your pups VERY closely to make sure the chi doesn't get hurt unintentionally by the bulldog. The size difference will be great as they mature.

I'm having this same problem! Jasper is one year old and weighs 11 lbs and Buttercup is 8 months old and weighs about 50 lbs. They want to play with each other but Buttercup is very, very rough and Jasper is so submissive that he just freezes up while she mauls him.
We've only had Buttercup for about a month so right now we are working on redirecting her when she gets too rough. Also trying to wear her out outside before she comes in to hang out with Jasper and the kids.

I really don't know if they will ever be allowed to play outside together. Jasper wants to run and Buttercup wants to chase....Buttercup gets really focused and intense.

It would seem to me that with the bulldog pup being so young right now, that the chi will probably "teach" him to play nicer.

You could try redirection by getting the bulldog's attention on something else when he gets too rough. My trainer suggests grabbing the scruff of a puppy's neck and saying a firm "no" to correct, so you could try that. The biggest thing would be to really get the bulldog puppy tired before letting them play. That way the play might be gentler and you can praise the heck out of him for being "easy".

I'm not sure if I'd ever feel 100% confident letting them play with no supervision. That's a pretty big size difference.

We taught my standard poodle (45 lb) that if she wants to play with my havanese (12 lb), she must be lying down. We started with her on a leash and every time she'd get up from lying down we'd stop their playing and only let it start again when she was lying down. Now she lies down on her own when my havanese initiates play. I think it's much safer that way because it stops my havanese from getting stepped on and it means she can get away very easily if she feels overwhelmed.

Now that they're older they've learned to play nice together on their own, but at the start when they were playing in the house we found that rule useful. We still let them run and chase outside.

Don't use rough methods to train your pups. There is a good chance that the Chi will help teach the Pit to self-handicap .. as Leah000 suggested. I imagine that the Chi already makes most of the noise when playing. You do want to watch to make sure that the energy level doesn't increase too much, and both breeds can escalate. Even though it's OK if both of them growl, bark, and bounce,/run around... you can define the energy level that you're comfortable with.

When they are playing too roughly for you, stop them, ask them to Sit (the Pit may be more compliant), praise and provide a tiny treat... a fingernail sized treat is adequate for both breeds, even at full size. Then, let them go back to playing. IN a few weeks, They will learn to play at the level that you want. You will still have to monitor them when they play... but at some time I expect the Chi to pester the Pit to come play....

BTW, socialize both with many different dogs, after the Pit has all of his shots... and teach strong Bite Inhibition.
