Re: 1 yr old pit recue dog jumping/play biting

Thanks so much for the info. Really appreciate it and will give the yelps a try.

Shame I haven't been able to have someone video the jumping in the yard so I could show why I've been having such a problem with the "turn and ignore" approach. The dog jumps like he has springs in his legs and is literally at my head level. He's started aiming his bites at my arms so he springs up, I turn to avoid/ignore him and he still gets hold of my coat arm or, even more fun for me, pinches my bicep as he bites the back of my arms. It is never a single jump/bite attempt...its a barrage of 8-10 of them in the span of a few seconds. So, when I try to walk away he is still pummeling me with jumping/biting at the back of my arms or springing off of my torso. When he calms down and has all 4 paws on the ground i pet/praise him, but there is no break in between the jumping/biting blitz to praise/reinforce the behavior I want because one jump is immediately followed by another jump/bite attempt for 30 seconds to 2 minutes (whenever he gets tired of jumping).

Really hoping the yelping works. I'll give it a go and update you in a couple days.

This is one technique you could try-
Put a nice wide collar on the dog and leash him. Get a handful of treats ready. Get him focused on the treats and stand on the leash without him noticing that you are standing on the leash. Give a few inches of slack, but not enough for him to really jump up, just enough that you aren't actually holding him down. Ask him to sit and treat. If he jumps, he will hit the end of the leash but won't recognize it as you doing anything. Ask for sit again, treat if you get the feet on the ground. Repeat. Don't lure him into jumping by holding treats up high. Ask for sit, say Good Boy or use a clicker, and then treat magically appears. Repeat.

I wanted to share this to give you some hope-- Luna, the same dog that couldn't sit still and not nibble and jump on me long enough to leash her when I got her at Thanksgiving time, has progressed to holding a "down-stay" at 15 feet away until told to "break" in a room full of dogs and people. There's hope for you and rescue pup yet

    That's AWESOME! Thanks for sharing!!!
Petey the pup and I are making some slow, and steady progress. He's still jumping on me, but a little less and definitely with less nipping. Baby steps. We'll get there

When we go into the yard, he is less interested in fetching a ball or playing with a toy than he is trying to mouth my hands. He had a jumping up problem since day 1 and during our first obedience class last week, the trainer told me to turn and ignore his jumping for attention and reward when his paws are on the ground. We have been working on that.

When he is in the yard, though, it seems all bets are off. He gets excited and jumps on me A LOT more. In last 2 days has added nipping to that. His tail is wagging and it isnt aggressive, but not a way I want to "play." He's started jumping in the air at or near me and nipping for my hands or loose clothes.

He's been getting exercise (in yard with a ball and daily walks on the lease and play dates with another pit) I've never played rough with him.

Can someone help me with what I need to do to correct this? Specifically, stop the jumping and nipping at my hands and clothes and stop his mouthing in general. I've only had him for a week and want to get a handle on this quickly before it becomes an ongoing issue.

    Your advice please...Thanks in advance.
The simplest is that any of that behavior equals instant end of play and end of attention. In other words, just the opposite of what he wanted to happen which is more play and more attention.

I also add what I want the dog to do instead, like sit, or heel. For instance Hope has a bad jumping habit when I come home from work, so I ask her to heel and give no attention until she does. I started with a simple sit though. So now when she is all excited when I get home and wants to jump she heels and sits.. and we have a little party.

I been having the same problem with Ares. In his case, ignoring him doesn't work. He start biting on me. Lately I keep him on leash with a prong collar for another issue. His teacher suggested it because he's a bit bull-headed. He's a little better behaved with it on, the problem is when I take it off. It seems he knows he can get away with anything with it off.

Go back to page 1 and read the suggestion about The Bite Stops Here. Rather than ignore him, leave him alone by himself in a safe, boring area.

    Update on the Rescue pup.....
We made some progress and the jumping and biting in the yard was nearly gone, BUT we seem to have regressed this week. Same deal as before. Jumping, and when i try to try away/ignore he bites at my arms. Really frustrating, but we are keeping at it. He'll get it eventually

Keep it up... in training there is a term called extinction burst. Sometimes, when a dog stops doing a behavior, he will try it once or twice more (to see if it might be OK) before he finally learns to stop...
