    Whining in car rides

My dog, Dolee, often whines while riding in the car, but he never gets sick, (no signs of car sickness) no throwing up and he is not afraid at all to go in the car. He in fact jumps right in and will veer toward the car as if to hop in the back seat even if we go by it. he just seems to see anything and everything and will whine no matter if there is nothing actually there. It's like he sees the out -of -doors and yearns for it?

My concern is that the 2 years prior (he's about 3 years old now) to when I got him at the shelter, that he may have been one of those dogs who rides in the back of trucks and wasn't often constrained.

He wears a car harness when we go places as I travel a lot with Dolee. Anyone have a similar situation and what do you do?

I have the same problem. My mom told me I should muzzle the dog. I don't think that is going to work. Maybe we should take them out every day in the car to desensitize them?

I don't have exactly the same problem, but I have a dog who came to me afraid of everything. He doesn't like being in the car, but he's going to have to get used to it because he will be coming to the city with me and staying at my Mom's when we go in for visits or Dr's appts. So, I take him everywhere with me. He comes to drop the kids at school in the morning and pick them up. He comes with me to get the mail(small town, PO boxes). The only time he can't come is places I can't take him because I'd have to leave him in the car alone or tied outside for more than a couple minutes. He's DEFINITELY getting used to it and doing very well after just a week of being with us. He's still a PITA to get in and out, but that's because his biggest fear is going through doors of any sort.

So, I agree with Mixedwithlove about going for lots of rides to get him used to it.

If it's an excited whine, IMO, make it go away by teaching the dog to relax.

If you were to harness him in the living room, I'm guessing he would generate the same excitement as in the car. You might try to associate the harness with relaxation, by rewarding him for being calm while harnessed, first in the house, later in the car. Maybe a verbal cue to have him look at you, to break his focus from whatever's distracting him.

Trust the dog, he knows what he's doing.
