    Incision after neutering help?

    Hey everyone,

I just got my first dog neutered. He is 22 months. This is his third day after surgery, and I wanted to post a picture of the incision to see your opinions on if it's okay. I know his skin seems a little bit red, so I started putting triple antibiotic ointment on it. I know there are a lot of threads like this, but I couldn't find a picture of anything that looks the same. Does everything look normal? My dog, Roy, is not in pain.

    Thanks guys!

what kind of ointment are you using? a lot of human ointment is toxic. if you think there is an infection go to the vet. I can't see any thing from the pic.

It is equate triple antibiotic. I only put it on once, just started today. My vet paper said that "Mild redness can occur at the incision. If noted, please apply triple antibiotic ointment to the incision three times a day." So I'm not to worried about the redness, just the actual cut itself. It also says "Skin discoloration or pus at the surgical site requires treatment." There is no pus, but I'm not sure what qualifies as skin discoloration.

It looks like he has some pretty significant swelling along the suture line. Has he been licking it a lot? Is there any discharge? I would put an ice pack on it this evening for a few minutes and call the vet in the morning. If he has been licking it, you need to stop him. An elizabethan collar would help.

Nope no licking, he's been wearing the e-collar 24/7 since he came out of surgery. Do you think the swelling is more like "Non-painful lump near the incision for up to 2 weeks that could be a mild fluid accumulation or reaction to sutures under the skin?" In person it doesn't really seem like anything is swollen other than maybe the incision, but if someone cut me open i would assume the incision would be slightly above the rest of the skin.

It's a little bruise-y but I don't think it looks too bad. You can always call your vet and ask them to peek at it if you're unsure though.

“...his skin seems a little bit red...” that's normal, because inflammation is happening. If your doggie doesn't feel pain when you touch the area around the incision, I think it's ok, no problem at all. Following your vet's prescription is enough.

Thanks guys. Its now been almost 7 days. The vet said to leave the E-Collar on 7-10 days. I have been temporarily taking it off when i can watch him, otherwise i keep it on. But he is trying to lick. Now, however, it is just a scab. Is this normal? And is it okay for him to lick the scab? I know I should try to stop it but he's a dog so I assume I won't be able to stop it EVERY time. But I wasn't sure if it can still get infected after it scabs over?

Don't put ointment on unless your vet says to do so, if disolvable cable stitches you could mess up healing. Also, human ointment isn't always ideal for a pet. Often the red is a combo of razor burn & surgery healing. If you are concerned then you need to talk to your vet. As long as it isn't super hot to the touch, *****, posh or wet then in general it's just healing but again, call your vet.

We left the collar on our dog only when we couldn't watch him, when we were at work, sleeping, busy....we also have a dog that liked his collar on. We used the time off of the collar as training reinforcement. Of the "leave it" command.
