help identify rash - underside of dog, near where testicles used to be

    Hi,
Cody is a 1.5 year old sheltie mix. I've had him for 6 months now.

I just noticed this spot on his underside, where his left testicle used to be. He was neutered before we adopted him, so it shouldn't be from complications with the neutering. It looks like a rash, that redish area of skin. I took a picture:

Also, see those two black marks just south of the rash? I'm not sure what that is. I don't think he had that before. Tick bites? I'm not sure.

He's been licking that area recently, now that I think back on it. I was just too dumb to notice.

Thanks for any help or suggestions. The rest of his coat/skin seems to be in good condition, and we haven't noticed any health issues.

It looks a bit like flea bites to me...is he on a flea preventative? As far as the black dots, I've seen those on lots of dogs, I doubt they are anything to worry about.

He's on Frontline Plus. Anything I can do to help it heal? We haven't found any fleas so far. And it's only in that area that we can see, although with his coat, it's hard to get to the skin except for those bald areas.

I don't know what area you are in, but Frontline no longer works here where I am. The fleas seem to have built an immunity to it. We have to use either Advantix or Advantage. Anyway, flea bites was the only thing that came to mind when I saw your pup's rash, but it could certainly be something else. Can you tell if it's itchy? Have you talked to your vet about it? Just to make sure it's not fleas, you might want to check for flea poop....little black specks that look like dirt, but when wet it turns red. Fleas are really difficult to find, especially when the dog has a long double coat.
