Vet wants our dog off Phonobarbital immediately . . .

Last November our dog had a number of seizures (grand and petit) in one weekend. He has been on Phenobarbital every since without a single break-through seizure. Lately he hasn't been eating well and has dropped 10 lbs. The vet ran a bunch of tests and today left a message for me to pick up some strong steroid meds and to immediately stop giving him the Phenobarbital. I'm a little nervous doing that, since everything I've read says that you have to wean a dog from Phenobarb gradually, not just quit cold turkey. I won't be able to speak with the vet in person until tomorrow morning to ask questions and find out just what the lab results show.

    Anyone have experience with this???

How much is the dog on? I am not a vet and this is only my personal experience, but our Puggle was having seizures and was put on pheno (60mg I think? It was a while ago, so I'm not sure). He was only on it for a few months, but that shouldn't much matter since blood levels were up. Anyway, when he came off of it he had no residual effects. He did have a seizure, but only after about 6 months off of it and we have since started a raw diet after learning he's allergic to corn and that that could be aggravating the seizures.

If your vet said it was OK, I would honestly trust them. The cons of continuing the medication out weight the benefits of stopping it, or your vet would never had said to stop. Just make sure you keep close watch on the pooch and that you are fully aware of the location of your 24-hour emergency vet is located.

He takes a 1grain pill every 12 hours (he never needed to move up from the initial low dose they started him on). I wish I could have spoken to the vet before stopping the PB and starting the steroid (he left a message but was out of the office by the time I was able to call back). The vet himself told me yesterday that you cannot just stop giving Phenobarb . . . I'm guessing there must have been something in the lab work that told him to stop immediately. I just know how long it took our poor dog to adjust to the phenobarb in the first place, I can't imagine just stopping cold-turkey will be pleasant. Add to that the strong steroid and he's going to be a basket case. The vet is supposed to call in the morning, so hopefully I'll get more info. on what the blood work indicated is wrong (the vet wrote on our receipt "autoimmune").
