How does one know their dog's ears need to be cleaned?

You can see the dirt. Different dogs and different types of ears require cleaning at different intervals. I use an ear wash on a cotton ball and just wipe it out. I'm no expert, but that's what I've always done.

I know with my dog since he has hanging ears, they tend to smell. I say clean your dog's ears at least twice a week if you can to keep them clean.

Floppy or non-floppy, that is the question.

My floppy-ear'd gets a flush once a week and a powder/pluck once a week, about three days apart. If they start to smell, I've waited too long.

He has floppy border collie ears, if that makes any sense. He holds them more open than a lab would (He is a BC/lab cross) in a way where often air/light can get in. I don't see any dirt, or smell anything though, so I'll just keep checking.

    So kinda half-and-half?

I'd give them a quick clean once a week. That should keep dirt/smell at bay and weekly handling of face and ears will be good for him. If he lays down on his side, rather than belly, the down ear may need more frequent cleaning than the up ear.
