    dog with no tears

My little shih tzu has chronic dry eyes that crust over and stick onto his eye lid. It's severe. His whole eye ball will have crust coating it. I put drops and oil in his eyes several times a day but the root problem remains.

Anyone have an idea how to help my dog's body/organ heal so the dry eye goes away?

Have a chat with your vet.

Don't put oil in his eyes...he can get conjunctivitis that way. See your vet. He may have an eye infection or a blocked tear duct, which is easy to fix.

Here is an article that helps explain what the causes of dry eye are and some of the treatments: http://www.shihtzu.org/articles/arti...&menu=Articles
    Hope this is of help.

    Hi,
I have an eleven year old shih tzu that has developed a "dry eye" condition in his right eye. He was given a Schimer test that indicated dry eye. He then had a series of medications from erythromycin ophthalmic ointment, cyclosporine aqueous 1% opth. susp, and tobramycin opthalmic solution. None of these made any improvement. The eye discharge was white/pale yellow and as time went on the cornea became opaque with a loss of vision. He was then given simplicef for another skin problem and the discharge quit, the eye cleared up, cornea became transparent, and his eyesight returned. As long as he takes 50 Mg of simplicef daily his eyesight is fine. I know that antibiotics are not to be used prophylactically, but without it he can't see with his right eye. Is there a reason that this medication works this way? It isn't even used for eye infections that I know of. I can't get an explanation from my vet and I want to find out what to do next for Bernard's eye sight.
