Good age to have a dog spayed?

I've been reading loads of things on the subject, since it'll be my first time raising a dog and our family's first female dog (though, she'll be totally mine), and I got three answers. 1) At 6 months 2) Before first heat cycle 3) After first heat cycle. My mom would certainly not agree with the third option, so it's between the first two.

I was wondering about your experiences, and what you know about spaying a dog? I will ask our vet's opinion on this when I actually get the puppy, but I'd like to start exploring my options now.

If you are getting a Aussie i would wait until at least 12 months old.

it's better physically for the bitch to be spayed after her first heat, and if you plan on showing her in altered I would seriously consider letting her finish maturing before spaying her.
