    Question Flea Infestation!

I have had three dogs for over 2 years now.

Living in three different houses in that time period (this apartment being the third) My dogs have never had a flea problem this serious.

I kind of skip around with flea medicine because I know the fleas can become immune to it, i gave them their flea medicine about 6 weeks ago, tomorrow will be their next time.

Anywho, my sister's maltese is having this nasty skin irritation from the fleas. His skin is easily irritated with or without fleas and he can't use most shampoos. He's ripped out the bottom half of his body hair and has scabs in that area. My sister says the topical flea medicine makes it just as worse so I was thinking the flea pill? is that safe(r)?

My dachshund is semi okay she is losing a little bit of hair around her legs but i think with the flea medicine and a thorough cleaning of the house with borax will help clear her problem.

My pitbull is doing pretty fine, he sleeps in a separate room from the two other dogs so he doesn't have as many fleas. Plus, I don't let him scratch himself. When I see he is itching, I will scratch for him.

My question is what should i use for the maltese?

I bought some hydrocortisone shampoo from pet supermarket & read online baking soda is good so I just gave him a dry bath with that.
But is there any other solutions to this?

Any advice will help. Thank you & Sorry for such a looong post!

    Re: Flea Infestation!

What topical flea meds are you giving? What pill are you talking about, Comfortis? If you live in the US and are talking about Comfortis or Sentinel you will have to take the Maltese to the vet because both are prescription meds. If the Maltese's flea infestation has caused that much of a hair lose he/she needs to see a vet because chances are there is a bacterial infection also going on.

Since your flea infestation is heavy you really need to do the fleas preventatives more often than every 6 weeks. You can safely apply Advantage every two weeks the same is true with frontline plus. How is the maltese?
