Hi there, I am new to this board. We have a 14 week old Choc lab/golden retriever mix that we rescued. The foster family and rescue place had him on the science diet which we've kept him on but now I am not so sure. I heard they were supposed to poop less on this but every single day he goes at least 5 times spread throughout the day. Yesterday he went six! The vet tested his stool which came back fine. I don't know if we should just switch the food and if so to what? Something that I can buy that's reasonably priced that I can get at petsmart. Also I thought maybe this is normal for a puppy to poop so much? Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated!

I wouldn't be too worried. Pups tend to poop and pee a lot more than adult dogs. As long as the poop is firm I wouldn't be too worried.

A better type of dog food might help though. At least you wouldn't be using one of the many brands of food that has gluten in it.

Not being an expert in the food market, I'm certain if you look in the dog food forum you can find a list of the many different brands of healthier dog foods.

Availability of the better brands varies from region to region.

My 4 month beagle has been pooping sooo much the past couple of days! She normally would only go about 4 times a day. I was away for a few days and she stayed with a friend, I am wondering if she was given some different food (she is normally on Hill's Puppy food). Today she has been about 6/7 times! Some of it this evening was runny, I think I might have to take her to the vet.

Check out the many topics on the Food Forum. Science Diet...one could do much better putting it in the trash. There are many much better than this one such as Timberwolf, Canidae, Innova or Eagle Pack are good starters. Check into the recalls from all companies before settling on any of them.

Look at the list of ingredients. If corn is in it with in the first 5 ingredients, they will poop alot.

Corn, in it's "whole" form may be digestible and hold some nutritional value, but I highly doubt that the makers of Science diet are standing there shucking whole corn kernels into their food. Corn gluten meal is used in most of their formulas, which means they are adding something that has absolutely NO nutritional value.
An excerpt from http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html
The main ingredient in dry food for dogs and cats is corn. However, on further investigation, I found that according to the AAFCO, the list is lengthy as to the corn products that can be used in pet food. These include, but are not limited to the following ingredients.
Corn four is the fine-size hard flinty portions of ground corn containing little or none of the bran or germ.
Corn bran is the outer coating of the corn kernel, with little or none of the starchy part of the germ.
Corn gluten meal is the dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.
Dogs don't need corn, they are CARNIVORES - just like they don't need wheat, brewers rice and all the other nasties that Science Diet likes to put their food. Ditch the Science Diet, there are far better foods out there for your dog.
