    Bordetella vaccine

Wesley will have to be boarded for a week from July 29-August 5th. On his medical chart, it says "bordetella, annual" so I assumed it was an annual vaccination. However, looking around online, some people say to get your dog vaccinated every 6 months.

The facility that Wesley will be boarded at requires the Bordetella vaccine, and his last vaccination for Bordetella was on 2/3/2010. So, if he needs the vaccine every 6 months, that will overlap with the time that he's there.

I'm definitely in favor of NOT overvaccinating my dog--is there a Bordetella titer? Is it true that he "needs" the Bordetella vaccination every 6 months?

I think there are just different opinions out there as to whether it needs to be done every 6 or 12 months. My dogs get it once a year. *shrug*

Ask the kennel what they require. I would not do it unless you MUST do it in order to board him.

The companies that develop the vaccine advise that any dog which is boarded, taken to dog parks, or commonly around other dogs should recieve the vaccine every 6 months. Typically it is an annual vaccine but if you board, any kennel will require it every 6 months. Same with day camp/care, or similar activities. There are many strains of Bord. and it mutates.

Typically if the vaccine ends up being due during the time the dog is boarded, they won't make you get it right before you board, but if it is expired before you come in, you will need to get it again.

In the past I have only ever taken Rocky once a year for the Bordetella. I do receive notifications in the mail every 6 months reminding me to bring him in for it but he is only in a boarding facility for 1 week out of the entire year and I have never had an issue with the location we board at being okay with that. I'm starting to think it's personal preference really and that it also depends on how often your dogs are in boarding facilities.

I wouldn't give it more than once a year esp. since there are soooo many different strains of kennel cough that most of the time a dog can STILL get it even when vaccinated. I never give it to my dogs and they are constantly around other dogs but not boarded and have never had an issue with it. I would simply do what is necessary to have him boarded and leave it at that.
