13-year old yorkie-poo died tonight, unknown causes

My 13-year old (in human years) yorkie-poo died at my dad's house tonight. He just called to tell me. The worst part is we don't know what from. His symptoms were such: Over the course of a mere five days, he began vomiting/diarrhea after eating, then stopped eating/drinking, had a loss of energy, and then simply died in his sleep.

To make matters more tragic, he was scheduled to visit the vet this morning because my dad knew something was up. Perhaps they could have diagnosed him, but it may have been too late. The dog was just at the vet in January, where he was given a good bill of health -- no cancer or anything. So I guess my question is, what could it have been? He was old, sure, but he didn't have any illnesses.

I'm sorry for your loss. Was he up to date with all his shots? Any chance he could have gotten into anything? Cleaning chemicals, fertilizers, etc? Those symptoms cover a wide range of issues.

I am sorry for your loss.

13 years old is a senior dog. Senior dogs and puppies are generally more susceptible to viruses, toxins etc. He may have had a clear bill of health in January, but in a dog 3 months can be considered a considerable amount of time for things to develop. Without a necropsy it would be difficult to determine why he died, but I highly suspect organ failure (related to age or to the introduction of a toxin of some sort) that caused the vomiting and inappetance. He was likely highly dehydrated after a couple of days, and dehydration itself can be fatal.

My sympathies. It's never easy. Know you gave him a good life.

I am terribly sorry for your loss and can only imagine how frustrating it is not to know what took your baby's life. You can ask your vet to do a necropsy (autopsy) if you think it will alleviate some of the pain of your loss. I did exactly that when I lost my last baby.

I would like to mention for others that may read this thread that when it comes to toy breeds, especially the teeny tinies, it only takes one day of vomiting/diarrhea and not eating or drinking to cause severe dehydration and/or hypoglycemia, both of which do lead to death if not treated quickly.
