Question Best food for a husky

What is the better food for them? I would like a food that will help keep their coats beautiful and at the same time be healthy and not cause them to gain any unnecessary weight as they are already not as active as they should be

I think raw is best for every breed of dog.

We just switched to RAW over the summer with my 3 year old husky, and I would say that it has been amazing for keeping her at a target weight (she was too skinny, and now she's perfect says the vet). She blew her coat for the first time about 3 weeks after starting, and about 3 months after we started (a month ago) I could really start to feel the change in her coat, its much more silky and soft than it was before. They say that the RAW diet makes the changes on the inside first, then works its way out, and I would have to say that she is doing much better on this diet (energy and general health). I don't think I'll ever go back to kibble. The only key is finding good prices. The best way is to order in bulk and freeze it. We joined a yahoo group for people in my area that will do large group orders through a restaurant supplier so we get some killer deals.

i completely agree that, for me, raw is the way to go. it takes a lot of time, research, and commitment. i understand that it is not for everyone.

if you don't want to switch to raw 2 of the best foods out there, imho, are orijen and evo

you can also look at this site and decide for yourself which food you feel comfortable feeding.

I fish based diet works best for artic breeds. Whether you decide to go raw or not, i'd go with fish.
because they are a breed developed in an area where fish was the most readily available protein source their systems do best on it.

If you just want to supplement for the healthier coat, you could add a bit of olive oil or fish oil to the meal. When we did kibble, we always had to do Lamb because its all Ami's stomach would agree with, and even then, her stools were always softer than they should have been. I like having more control of what she eats now, and she's getting much more variety, too...which is giving her a healthier appetite.

This is my dogs typical diet, but its always changing as I learn new things or find nice deals (everyone's diet is going to be a little different depending on what they believe to be the "right path"): We feed mostly chicken (leg quarters, backs and necks), as it has all of the important vitamins and minerals, once a week they get canned fish (usually sardines or mackeral, I bought some salmon to try it, but I heard that the "fresh" salmon shouldn't be fed due to possible parasites), when it starts getting colder, I will probably give them 2 cans a week to keep thier fur from drying out with the heat on. They also get 1-2 full eggs a week. Most days, in addition to chicken, I give them a few ounces of beef heart for their red meat. Also 3-4 meals a week I substitute a chicken meal with either turkey neck or pork neck.

I don't feed much organ meat unless the meals I am giving them don't have bits of organ meat attached (quarters and backs usually have this...so only when feeding a lot of neck). The rule of thumb is 1 lb of organ for every 10 lbs of meat. But mine probably get a little less than that. I supplement them with a multivitamin, and sometimes they get some veggies and fruits (check to make sure its safe! and more veggies than fruits), Ami also gets a cranberry capsule, but thats because she has urinary track issues. And sometimes for a treat, or if they have had soft stools, they get yogurt...they just loooooove yogurt

Seems confusing when you first get started, but you get the hang of it after a while

But the problem is that most of huskies now, don't run as much they were bred to.
