I have a Lab also that is just fine when he is in the house but when he gets a bit active running around or taking a wallk he acts like he has just ran a marathon. Huffing and puffing. He looks like he can't catch a breath. I don't know if it is normal. I can just tell you mine does the same thing. It probably doesn't help that he is a little over weight too!!

Is your dog overweight at all? Many dogs will start to breath heavy when they get excited. Take it easy until the dog calms down and catches his/her breath - if the problem escalates take your dog to the vet. Otherwise, just keep an eye on it and talk to your vet during your next scheduled check-up.

Sassy has had a grade 1 heart murmur forever. Last summer she started panting heavily during walks and even doing forceful exhaling at times. Last time she was at the vet he checked and her murmur has progressed to a grade 3. Just make sure the vet checks the heart carefully!
