    American Bulldog Health Problems

I have been having major health problems with my white american bulldog. He is about 18 months old and weighs 90 pounds. He has been extremely energetic, happy, and healthy his entire life. About 10 days ago, he starting acting fairly lethargic. Two days later, I woke up in the morning and his entire face was swollen and he had hundreds of swollen bumps (hives) all over his body. I took him to the animal hospital, and they gave him 3 shots of cortisone and put him on an IV. After that, I gave him 75 mg of benadryl twice per day for 3 days. The hives have basically gone away, although there is still a faint hint of them. It has now been 48 hours since he had any benadryl. The problem is that he simply has no energy. He has barely moved in a week, even now that he is off the benadryl. He has been throwing up at least once/day.

I have tried changing his diet - I am now feeding him cooked chicken instead of dog food and only giving him bottled water, as well as preventing him from going into our yard.

Does anyone have any idea what is wrong with him or what I can do to help? Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear about your boy's health problems. I don't know what it could be, but I would take him to another vet for a second opinion. It definitely sounds like something is still wrong.

Wow...sure sounds like he had a very bad allergic reaction to something!...

We had something like that happen to our dobe years ago....not the lethargic part...but his face swelled and he had hives all over his head and we had to take him to the vet for a cortisone shot and keep him on benadryl for a few days...we could never figure out what it was..but we are sure it was something out in the back yard...ether a plant or bug that he go into and did a number on him.
