    Sick from topical flee treatment?

I gave my dog, a Jack Russell/Dachsund mix a topical flee treatment last night after his bath. At approx. 0530 this AM he began to throw up and shaking and walking badly. My daughter found a website that said to bath him again and since he was already vomiting, do not indcude. That seemed to help until about two hours ago and he went outside to do his business and he was walking funny again. He is lethargic and just laying down. But after the bath at 0530 he was jumping around. If you have any advice I would appreciate it. The clinic where I take him is closed. Thank you!!! Ed & Mister

There should be a 1-800 number on the flea product package. Call and talk to them. What product was it?

Don't want to bad mouth the product. I am talking to a friend who thinks too much of the medicine was abosorbed into his system due to me applying it to him while he was still wet from his bath.

Normally you should wait at least 24 hours after a bath to apply the product. That gives the natural oils a chance to build up which helps disburse the med.

It's also possible that your dog is having a bad reaction to the product regardless of when you applied it. Dogs have been known to have adverse reactions to the topical flea meds.

I personally wouldn't let him go much longer without medical attention.

If it was an over the counter flea treatment (ie Hartz..which has a bunch of problems with pets dying from their flea/tick treatments), I'd take him to a vet. There have been deaths from the spot flea/tick treatments.

Thanks everyone for the responses. You are not going to believe this but he is up and walking normally now.

That is good. You may want to take him to the vet for a blood draw to check for liver or kidney damage still. I would. That was scary!
