Why does my dog obsessively lick the floor?

Every so often my lab/border collie mix starts licking the floor, walls, carpet. It seems like he has something stuck in his throat because he coughs and occasionally throws up. He also loves it if I let him out to eat grass, which he does till he throws up.
I'm thinking its a stomach thing although I never see him actually eat something wrong.
    Any of this sound familiar?
    Thanks for your help, Surella

How old was your baby when you got him? Usually excessive licking, even their legs is due to being weaned too fast. Its a comfort sign. Usually mild distraction helps. To fuss at the dog only makes the dog more insecure.
