    Puppy just got Spayed.... Questions.

My Poor little Puppy just got spayed and I know it's good but now I see why I really didn't want to go through with it! It's so depressing and sad seeing her depressed and down.

My questions are is there anything to relieve her pain? And she keeps whimpering every now and then is that normal? Also she keeps standing up, well just sitting on her butt and staring or kind of drooping her head with her eyes somewhat closing, she finally found a comfortable spot to lay but sometimes she will just get right back up....

Any help I can get will be much appreciated!

    Thanks everyone!

Usually the vet will give an option for pain management...so I'd be on the horn to the vet if she's still really tender on Monday.
She'll snap out of being down in the dumps in a few days and be back to her normal self...all the females we had spayed looked pitiful for a few days until they started feeling better...I know I'd feel bad if I had my internals completely removed. I'm a bit surprised the vet didn't give any kind of pain medication, most of them at least give it as an option if you want it.

Well they were great and the service was great so I had no complaints they even clipped her nails and it was all free since we get WIC, but I don't think they told My Wife about any pain med's because of the fact she would have most likely taken it.... They are very busy it seems so I would hope they know what they're doing in regards to that, it seemed as if they did a lot.

Why, do they always give meds afterwards?! :aranoid::

No not always. Most will offer it though, not all. The best vet I ever had would do the spay in the morning and you picked them up in the afternoon, no pain meds and instructions to give them walks not high in intensity but a fair length...moving around reduces edema (this was about a 75 year old vet, she's awesome but in another town and it's not easy for me to get to her from here at over an hour and a half drive) some vets don't reccommend this so you need to go by your vets instructions.
She'll survive without them, but if she's still whimpering etc on Monday I'd at least call and ask if that's normal (it's been awhile since I've had a female dog spayed...like at least 7 years)

My vet gives an injectable pain med before sending them home. I usually takes care of the majority of the pain, but will send Rimadyl home if you want it.

Our dog was just spayed this month. I think the best thing our vet suggested was to keep her in her crate, except for going outside, for about the first three days. She wanted to sleep and be left alone anyway. And since the crate is not big enough to walk around in she kept still and gave things a chance to start healing. We took her out when the other dogs were crated or outside and just kinda cuddled her a bit. But mostly she jsut stayed in her crate.

We didn't need any pain meds and she had no problems after being left alone for a few days.

When Belle got spayed she was down for about a day but I had a heck of a time keeping her contained when she wasn't taking her medicine. I gave her the pain medication because she's bad about saying she hurts. There was a lot more cuddle time, and I tried to keep a CLOSE eye on her and her behavior for anything odd. Her hardest time was not leaping off of things.

Re: Puppy just got Spayed.... Questions.

A lot of vets don't like to give pain meds for spays, because, if she doesn't feel the pain, the dog will try to do too much too soon and possibly rip out her stitches. Which is a very bad thing. So I'd only give her pain meds if she's still really sore after 2-3 days. But she should be OK, especially if she's young. I've never had any trouble with a spay, but one of our cats was older and had had manymany litters before we got her (she was a trailer park stray), and she was in terrible pain after her spay. She wouldn't let anybody touch her at all for 3 days. But younger animals recover faster, especially if they haven't had any litters. I think you're just seeing the worst of it because you got her back so quickly....if the vet had kept her overnight, she would have come home looking just fine. She's probably still dopey from the anesthetic, too.

this is a bit more intense then just a spay but 7 months ago i had a female prolapse while giving birth to one puppy (long story had to pull it out)but anyway When we took her to the vet to have the vet look at her she pushed the uterus back in stiched it in there and then preceeded with the spay and She didn't have any meds after wards and she was fine just a little down in the dumps for a day or two
