Please help! Puppies losing hair, and I can't go to the vet!

So for those of you that don't know, I have 5 seven week old puppies my husband and I rescued from the streets last Saturday.

Well the female got a strange bald patch on her back and it quickly got worse. So yesterday I took them ALL to the vet, which is 2 hours away. The vet examined them all and gave them all Ivermectin injection. He gave the female Clavamox that I have to give her for 2 weeks, and said her condition was NOT contagious. He also gave me Mal-A-Ket shampoo, which I used this morning on all 5.

Well today TWO of the others are rapidly losing hair. It's not quite the same as the females, hers was scabby and quickly went all the way bald. But I am worried and I have no idea what it is or what is causing it. Is there a possibility it is from too much bathing? We did 2 sulfur dips in the last week (a week apart), plus two baths. I had to keep bathing them because they were either covered in bugs (fleas and ticks), or had rolled in their poop. If that is the case why all of the sudden in the last 36 hours would they start rapidly losing hair?

I can't go back to the vet. I don't have a way to get there, and I simply can't afford it. I have already spent SO MUCH money rescuing these puppies, they have been to the vet twice in the last week plus all the food and cleaning supplies, etc. And I have to go back in 2 weeks, then figure out how I am going to pay to ship two of them (the other 3 have tickets paid for). I simply can NOT afford to go to the vet until 2 more weeks.

Any info would be appreciated, I am having a mild freak out over here =/

Did the vet test for mange?

I don't know! Why the hell wouldn't he? The female had patchy scabby hair loss. I am so unhappy...I just called and there are no vets in until tomorrow.

Unfortunately he is my only option for a vet here in Puerto Rico

You could check your invoice. It might show that a skin scraping was conducted.

Ivermectin is a broad spectrum antiparasitic which is commonly used to treat mites that lead to mange. It sounds as if your vet at least suspected mange and prescribed for it, regardless of whether a skin scrape was conducted.

Mange treatment can be a long road and results may be slow. It could also be allergies- food- or environmental-related. What are you feeding the pups?

Iams puppy. I know I know...But we wanted to save their lives without breaking the bank. They would have died if we didn't take them off the beach... I can't get a job until June 2013 and I am using the last of my savings on these guys. I know it's not ideal but I can't afford a whole lot more =/

I hope to God it's not mange. 4 of the puppies are supposed to fly in 2 weeks as I found them homes already. I don't know what I will do if it's mange, I simply can NOT afford long term treatment for 5 dogs.

I don't see anything on the invoice. So worried right now

My puppy had demodectic mange cause by weak immune system and i treated her with ivermectin. It was not contagious for other pets.
The treatment was not really expensive. I had to give her ivermectin once a day (oral) for over a month. The bottle was about 40$ and i used barely anything. It took at least a month before hair started to grow back, but not expensive to treat. I never did any dips or anything. Not sure about other type of mange. But te vet said puppies get that pretty often when immune system is weak . She was a rescue.

Ohhhh no.....even feeding and maintaining them for an extra month will be SO expensive, plus adoption chances are greater at a young age AND shipping cost is less for a lighter dog. I'm crossing my fingers....this could be really bad for me...

Where are they going? Can't you ship them with mange? Since its not dangerous for other pets? ( as your vet says)

OK, first of all talk to the vet about using liquid Ivomec, it's FAR cheaper than other ivermectin based treatments and very efffective, be sure all the pups get a skin scrape to confirm what is going on. Start ALL the pups on a decent Salmon oil (Omega 3's are antiinflamitory nad immune boosting), and B complex. It sounds like these pups copuld well have Demodex based mange which is NONcontagious and made worse by a weakened immune system/stress. If it's Demodex and getting caught early it will be easier to treat.

If it is demodex, I'd add powdered mushroom and acidophilus to Carla's suggestion of fish oil. That's what my dog, who struggles with demodex, takes and just taking those three supplements boosts his immune system to the point where he never has an outbreak.

I started fish oil yesterday. I don't think I can find any other home remedies, the stores on this island are pretty limited when it comes to holistic or homeopathic ingredients. Hell I can't even fine rosemary tea here! Gosh they are stubborn about the fish oil =/ For as ravenous they can be about their food it's amazing how they turn their noses up at the fish oil. My Yorkie loves it!

Vet said if it's demo mange the Ivermectin will clear it up. I hope I can still fly them even if they have it. I can't go back for another week and a half. When I go in next time I will ask him about flying with the mange, but I'm not so sure that's possible.

Is there by any chance any OTC medicine I can give them for antibiotic? The famale is on some now and the vet said the other two should be also, but like I said I can't go in yet.

No, you need to boost thier immune systems, the mite is present on every warm blooded animal and only gets out of control if the immune system is weak.
