What age do dogs start to mark?

How old is it when a male dog will start to lift his leg and mark territory? I have a 21 week old Yorkie, and would like to get him neutered at the right time so he does not start marking inside my house. I have heard the best time is to neuter right when the testicles drop, but I really have no idea..Help!

I have three dogs (and one puppy 1/2 Yorkie). My vet has always advised neutering at 5 months, this helps prevent certain behaviors. My dog is 9 months, at the late end of the range and I have not had him neutered yet. He went in last week and they nearly lost him (found out he has a heart condition and the muscle relaxer brought it out). He is lifting his leg now, and its frustrating to take him out on a leash as he goes a little here, a little there...! I did catch him trying to mark the corner of my bed, but I caught him in time to run him outside.
I'm afraid to neuter him now, but they tell me there are other medications they can give him and he will be safe. It was such a scare last week though that I am pretty much afraid to proceed. He also has a kidney infection that is being medicated, so we are at a standstill right now.
Word to the wise, don't buy your puppy from a pet store He checked out fine all the way through, until the medication was given. I heard the stories but felt like I was rescuing him and he was taken to the vet straight away. I thought I was lucky, he was fine.....he will BE fine, but we just have to watch certain things with him.
Talk to your local vet, but they generally say 5 months. My daughter's dog had one testicle that did not drop, but they were still able to neuter him.

Neutering may not prevent marking, but training will. As long as you prevent your dog from ever marking inside, he will not get into the habit of doing so. And I would never neuter my own dogs at 5 months. It's best to let them develop structurally first. I like to wait till 9 months to a year... others like to wait until 2 years.
