I was wondering where residents of Canada buy animal health supplies.

For example: Flea meds , HW prevention , medicated shampoo , wormers , vaccines for distemper/parvo and other general purpose health medications for dogs cats and farm animals.

I live in north Ga. (US) and we have many farm and pet health stores that make it easy to get none prescription items for everyday use.

I live in Vancouver Canada. We don't have any farm stores close by (you'd have to drive about an hour to get to the closest farm) or pet health stores that I am aware of. Lots of local small pet stores do sell medicated shampoos and basic flea med stuff.

I personally buy everything health related from the vet. My vets prices are very low and they carry everything you mentioned, I'm not sure they are making much if anything off dispensing them. They will order anything in for us that they don't carry as well. They ordered a brand of flea meds that I wanted that was different than what they usually carry.

Gally ,
I am glad you have been able to buy what you need from a local source. What I would like to know is can you buy wormers like safe-guard for dogs, distemper/parvo vaccine for dogs/cats and Ivomec (wormer) for horses from any walk-in store or mail order without prescription?

You can not buy any vaccines here without a vet prescription. You can't buy any of the "good" brands of flea/hw meds without a prescription either. We did everything in one trip when he was a pup, got a check up and got prescriptions for everything in one go.

As long as you are using the same vet you only need to get the prescription once as far as I know. So next year when I need to restock on his flea meds I just go in and they will sell them to me without a vet appointment for example. I believe you can order some of these things online without a prescription though, if you were trying to skip the vet for whatever reason that would probably be the only way to do it where I live.

Kyllobernese & Gally ,
Thank you so much , you have answered my question very well. I was curious what someone in Canada with a small farm with horses ,cattle ,goats and so forth would be able to buy in the way of animal health care meds. The HW meds are by prescription here in the US, but , you can walk into most any Vet office and buy what you need without seeing a Vet. Rabies vaccine in most states here is through a Vet only. I can remember going to our local pharmacy in the 1950's and buying animal health care meds as there was no Vet in our small town.

We have no mandatory Rabies Shots here. The only time I got a Rabies Shot for a dog was when I needed to go across the border into the USA. The Vet gives them one shot, another a year later and then they are good for three years. I have actually never been asked for my Rabies certificate going across the border in either direction but you can be sure if I did not have it, that would be the time they asked.

We can buy Tetnus shots from the Vet and give them ourselves. We do not have heart worms in our area so I don't know about it.
