How often do you vaccinate your dog?

My dog is supposed to get an "Annual" DHL2PP (something like that) vaccine. However, I read that having annual vaccinations isn't necessary, and increases the risk of vaccine-related adverse effects. Those same articles (I found them in dog magazines) said that having a distemper/parvo vaccine every 3 years is generally considered safe.

But some articles specified that it all depends on the manufacturer of the vaccine. Apparently some distemper/parvo vaccines are longer lasting than others. But still...even though my vet receipt specifies "annual" DHL2PP, doesn't that seem a little excessive?

    What do you guys think?

...Just double-checked her records, no idea why I threw the "2" in there. It's DHLPP - Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parainfluenza, and Parvovirus. I read the article by that doctor (Jean someone), and I'm kind of thinking of asking my vet if she could just do Distemper and Parvo. Again - what do you guys think?

In Texas, regulations allow my Vet to do rabies and DHLPP every 3 years. Ten years ago, she vaccinated ever year... however, 20 years ago, Ohio regulations allowed every 3 years. My point is that 1 yr vs. 3 years may be related to location or Vet preference. You can talk to your local Vet school, or to other Vets to ask about their preference. You can also look for a Vet that does blood work (titer) to demonstrate effectiveness and current antibodies.

Most combination vaccines are labeled for 1 year, there is a single product that I'm aware of that is labeled for 3 years (can't remember the manufacturer). How the vaccine is labeled has very little if anything to do with how long the immunity actually lasts, though. Also, as I recall, there was something weasel-y and eye roll-inducing about that 3-year label, though, but I can't remember what it was. I'd have to go back and look at it which honestly I don't have much interest in doing.

To put a label recommendation on a vaccine, my understanding is that a manufacturer has to do a duration of immunity study that proves the vaccine lasts as long as they say it does. So if a vaccine is labeled for one year, the manufacturer can prove it lasts a year - but they don't have to prove how long it actually lasts, if that makes sense. That is, they can stop their study after a year. The research in true DOI has largely been done by others outside the vaccine industry. Currently it seems that most veterinarians accept that vaccinating every 3 years is not going to lead to any loss of immunity or vaccine breaks/disease outbreaks. Personally, I think things will move towards an every 5-10 year interval as time goes on and nothing dire happens with the 3 year protocol.

Anyway, I personally vaccinate for rabies according to legal requirements (every 3 years where I live) and for DHPP every 3-5 years. As far as I know, most places don't have any actual legal requirement for the DHPP vaccine.

I do parvo/distemper at 16wks and thats it. Rabies is not required here,so I base it on risk..IE if the dogs is going to be traveling, if I have any concerned of then biting for any reason, if they will be out in the country or out in the bush etc..

lets just say I have has VERY bad experiences with both Boosters and Rabies vaccines..even the inital puppy series nearly killed one of my dogs, so I am extremly "gun shy" when it comes to vaccinating.

Re: How often do you vaccinate your dog?

My next puppy is getting shots done before I get her, and likely that'll be it. I'll titer test if I'm concerned about something, and not sure if I have to do rabies because we're crossing the border or not (I've heard both) so we'll wait and see.

I have read that the one year and three year vaccines are the same, just different labels...

If I had to, I'd do parvo/distemper separately, a month or so apart between the two, and rabies as late as possible. Storee has never been vaccinated, I fostered a litter of puppies with parvo and she never skipped a meal. Gotta wonder! She was titer tested at 8 months, the whole litter was, and she was the only one with good immunity to everything tested. The other littermates had different vaccines and all tested low for things. She's hardly ever been sick other than kennel cough once, where she coughed a few times for a week.

I also do Titer Testing now. I didn't do this before I switched to my new Holistic Vet. I was aware of them, but my old Vet just vaccinated every year. A couple of times my oldest Cavalier, Stella, even had a slight reaction and had to have another shot (steroid) to counteract it. My cat had a reaction the last time she was vaccinated, as well. No more shots for her at all. I should've started Titer Testing years ago, but the Holistic Vet is far away from my house. After my cat's reaction I bit the bullet and switched. I will have to do the rabies for my dogs every 3 years, though....unless a serious reaction occurs and then I'd get a medical exemption.

Re: How often do you vaccinate your dog?

My adult dogs get the Rabies Vaccine every three years. Any other needed vaccines I am sent a reminder of through the mail from the vet's office. The pup is UTD on all vaccines. But it is required to have the Rabies Vaccine repeated for her in one year; as I am told the rabies Vaccine needs to be done again to build up the immunity? After that it will be every three years..........................I want nothing to do with the canine flu vaccine. I am leery of new vaccines until they have been around for a long while. I worry about long term side effects.

Puppy set then first year and then we are done. They get a titer every 3 years.

I am excited that my county are going to start excepting rabies titers.

All rabies vaccines are possibly one- or three- year vaccines. Actually, there is strong proof the vaccine might offer immunity even longer than three years, but the tests hasn't been completed to change the labeling to reflect duration longer than 3 years. The first rabies vaccine should be boostered one year following the initial vaccine. Subsequent rabies vaccinations should be administered every 3 years.

As. less. as. possible. We learned the hard way as my brother almost died as a baby(though they claim it wasn't because of the vaccines, it was just "coincidence"). Anyhow, back to the dogs. Rascal only gets rabies every 3 years. Pippa got Distemper, Hepatitis, and Parvovirus twice. and the state requires she get two rabies vaccines by her first year. -.-

I vaccinate puppies. Then I give a booster at a year. Then I do three year rabies and titer for parvo/distemper.

I'm a fan of good holistic vets (mine's in a nearby town) but for routine visits I use a closer vet with more accessable hours (as in always available). Have known this vet for many years, and while they routinely do annual vaccinations, they will give three year rabies if you request it and will also send out titers if you request it. Sometimes I have to argue with the newer vet techs - yes you DO do that. Go check.

Titer all the way... But i would never NOT vaccinate a human. All the autism myths have been debunked and diseases of the past could very well come back if people stop getting immunized. I dont mess with that bc unlike my dog im not getting annual boosters.
