    3 days of diarrhea. Help/advice?

    Hi,
So, I gave Cody (1.6 years old, collie mix) a beef knuckle bone Friday afternoon. It's now Tuesday morning.

For the past 3 days, he's been having diarrhea. It's gotten only slightly better, but still pretty watery. He usually gets the runs after a meaty bone, so I expected it. I fed a few table spoons of can pumpkin each day so far. At first, it was looking really bad. The poop was watery and had some clear color stuff in it.

Now, it's just watery poop. But when he goes, he kinda farts it out

Yesterday, I came home for lunch to give him a potty break. Then when I got home after work (5 hours later), I found out he had to go in his kennel

Last night, he had to poop at 10PM, 2AM, and 5PM. That seems more frequent than Sunday night.

I'm not sure what might be wrong. In the past, his post-meat runs are better by the third day.

Should I take him to the vet? Is 3 table spoons of pumpkin a day too much or not enough?

I'd feed him some boiled boneless, skinless chicken and rice, and pumpkin (it's pure pumpkin, not spiced filling, right?), in several tiny meals a day for a day or two. If it doesn't improve see a vet, or if you notice lethargy, vomitting, fever.

I would start with a 24 hour fast - no kibble, pumpkin, rice, nothing. You can offer him broth, cook the chicken and rice with extra water and give him a cup of that cooled off, or low salt chicken broth mixed with water, but nothing else. Then offer him small meals of the chicken, pumpkin and rice with yogurt - a tablespoon with 1/4 cup of water to start, and slowly increase that if he's doing ok.
If you can get some slippery elm, offer him that mixed into the broth or food too. Probiotics, same thing.

Doing that gives his system a chance to rest and get rid of the stuff thats bothering him, and then you can slowly work back to his normal food. Know for next time to give him less bone! If that doesn't work then yes, go to the vet.

I use a package of chopped liver, 3 cups cooked rice, a large container of plain yogurt and a big can of pumpkin for my 'emergency' food, but haven't needed it for a long time.

If the consistency is watery I would be a bit concerned...Usually if a dog just ate something disagreeable, pudding consistency is okay, and you can just feed some rice and chicken, but if it's full out watery diarrhea, your dog may have a higher intolerance to the food, and you can ask your vet if it's a good idea to feed it to him if it's giving him bad diarrhea - The watery diarrhea is concerning because it can really dehydrate your dog, so just make sure he gets plenty of water in .. Meanwhile if I were you I'd lay off the knuckle bones for a while and see if there's a different treat that he likes equally well, and doesn't make him sick (ex. my dog eats femur bone, but it's not meaty, just has some marrow and barbequed, and he loves it!!)

The pumpkin won't hurt him, but reduce it to 1 tablespoon per meal. As Nikes wrote, make sure that there is no sugar or spice, just plain canned pumpkin.

Is the dog lethargic or normal energy? Is the diarrhea getting better after 3 days or is it the same?

If the dog is lethargic or even looks unhappy now, you should at least call the Vet. If the diarrhea is watery/clear after more than 3 days, call the Vet, because he could be getting dehydrated.

If the diarrhea is slowly becoming better formed and the dog still runs around and is fairly happy, things may be clearing up.

And, if this has happened before... stop giving knuckle bones.

Well, it was a scary couple of days, but Cody made it through. I posted a longer thread about what happened here:

    Thanks everyone!
